When did Chris Ferguson get his start in professional Poker?

Although I don’t watch Poker often, nor do I play much I have always found myself interested in Chris Ferguson. I’m not sure if it’s his look, or his skill but whenever I catch him on TV I stop and watch as long as the program is on. I always find myself playing as his character in video games as well. So this has led me to wonder how he got his start. What and where was his first professional poker game?

Believe it or not, Chris Ferguson started playing poker at the early age of 10 years old! Another strange fact is that, while in college, he played online poker through IRC chat servers! This actually makes sense, because this was a time before internet poker was a reality. As soon as he started realizing how well he was doing online and in home games with his friends, he went to Las Vegas to see how he would hold up against the pros. He played in tournaments with smaller buy-ins of several hundred, instead of his normal several thousands that he plays for now. Finally, after much success, he entered the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in 1995. I guess this could be considered his first "professional" poker game. At least to our standards now.

Five years after his first Main Event at the WSOP, he won it. He took it all in 2000, and will forever be remembered for it. Ferguson's career seems to pretty much fly by at the speed of light. He started then he became a Main Event champion! And since then, he's won at least 5 bracelets and made numerous final tables in other tournaments. He is crazy good and no one can deny that. I mean, even though he is always hidden behind those sunglasses, that stare is pretty intimidating. The thing I like about Ferguson the most is that he thinks about every situation thoroughly before he makes a decision. He doesn't ever snap-call an all-in, and he never gets visibly frustrated, angry, or rude. The guy is truly a class act and that's a big part of the reason he's respected so much in the poker community.

Hope this filled you in on what you wanted to know, and that you enjoyed the story of Chris "Jesus" Ferguson!

This is him without his glasses. Rare but awesome! From watching interviews and plenty of poker TV, I can tell, he's a nice guy, as intimidating as he may seem at the table.
