When answering a question within your expertise, should you include yourself or your credentials as a source?

When I answer questions in my area of expertise (relationships, mental health, etc.), I don't usually put myself as the source. I assumed that, if people wanted to know my background, they would click on my name and see my profile.

Another user suggested that I should add my credentials when answering a question.

Is there a policy on this? Should there be?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There is no policy on sources in general, let alone using your own credentials. However, since most web users are of somewhat limited attention span, expecting someone to know that there is something to be checked out by clicking on your Mahalo member ID, then reading through the short bio, just to find out what your credentials are, is probably expecting too much. Thus, I'd say that putting your credentials in the "What's Your Source" area whenever relevant would be of service to the asker and any other readers who are interested in the thread.

As for the part of your question about should this be required, I'd say most definitely not. How would Mahalo be able to police this? And even if they could, this would be a massive breach of privacy of those members who do not want to put in their bio and/or answers anything personally identifiable about themselves.

Bottom line - putting your credentials in the sources block is a good idea, but is not required (nor should it be).

@drmatt, whenever a psychiatric Questions arises you will be the best choice in Mahalo with enough knowledge to Answer it, if you don“t have a link at hand, putting your background and expertise on the area as a source will come in handy for the Asker.

@kerryk is another Mahalonian I may think off when math questions are asked. It will be hard even for him, to find a link with the appropriate mathematical equation to confirm. Putting his credentials to support the assertion will certainly help.

If a question has an answer that someone could reasonably think of on their own, then no, I don't think you need to cite yourself. It wouldn't hurt, though.

If you have a degree or experience in a field, I think you should self-disclose. I don't think it could ever make you look worse if you're an actual expert--then you're not just another random person spouting off his or her opinion.

If there's a concern that someone might want to litigate, I think you would be covered from any malicious litigious person who wants to say "dr. matt told me this, but it didn't work" because Mahalo has a clear disclosure up at the top the answer pages for any sensitive topics.
