When and how did you discover that Santa Claus was not real?

Tip for best answer: M$0.10
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

What... He's not real??

Seriously, I live in The Netherlands, and we have Sinterklaas, who is a local alternative for Santa Claus. He is a holy man, living in Spain, who travels by boat to The Netherlands early December, and celebrates his birthday by handing out gifts to children.

I actually don't remember exactly how and when I found out he isn't real, but I know I pulled off his beard when I was still two years old.

In hindsight, I find it very interesting to see that even those boys and girls that were fully convinced that Sinterklaas wasn't real, were shivering with fear when the dressed up man appeared at our school, and called them out to step forward, they had to sing songs to Sinterklaas, and did so with shivering voices, before they recieved their presents.

So, even though all of us at some point had learned that Sinterklaas wasn't really sevenhundred years old and still alive, at the moment of his appearance, all of us suddenly believed again. I guess it's the magic of the moment...

I still enjoy celebrating Sinterklaas better than Christmas, even though Sinterklaas is generally regarded as a children's celebration, while Santa Claus is more of a cleebration for adults (at least, in The Netherlands).

When I found the presents already labeled. And stayed awake to watch mom bring them downstairs LOL.

I was probably like 10 or so.
