When and by whom was New York discovered?
Was the territory that is New York City today actually bought from the Native Americans and if so, for how much? And why did it seem so attractive to the discoverers?

New York was not exactly “discovered.” Henry Hudson first piloted his ship from the coast into the natural harbor that now we refer to as Manhattan and to the east of the “river” that bears his name. He did this in 1609 and the colony of New Amsterdam was founded by the Dutch East India Trading Company in 1620. The city was renamed New York when the British forced out the Dutch in 1664. Yes, the Dutch gave the Native Americans some money and some other trinkets to surrender the tip of what is now lower Manhattan. The Native Americans did not exactly understand that the settlers meant to stay, so there is much speculation that the Indians were hoodwinked by the folks from Europe.
