The epic fantasy classic The Lord of the Rings was written by J.R.R.Tolkien. He created it as a sequel to the shorter children's book The Hobbit which was written in 1937, but The Lord of The Rings developed into a much larger work than Tolkien ever foresaw.
He wrote it in stages between the years of 1937 and 1949 which spanned the period of World War 2.
J.R.R.Tolkien was a professor of Oxford University England and was also a philologist.
Although The Lord of the Rings is published in three books, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of The King, it was written as one work, the publishers decided on the division of the work and it was released during 1954-55.
Since the book was published, it has consistently gained popularity especially since the release of the radio series and the films which in similar fashion to the book were released in three parts.
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, CBE was born 3 January 1892 and died 2 September 1973.
