about Danny Boy Lyrics
When a man sings the song, shouldn't Eily dear replace Danny boy??
If Eily dear is used, "it's I, it's I must go" would replace "it's you, it's you m;ust go". Also, "And you'll" be here replaces "And I'll" be here; "Someday, may be when" all the flow'rs replaces "But when ye come, and" all the flow'rs; "And" I am dead replaces "If" I am dead

My first thought was, no, because I always thought Danny Boy was a song sung by a father to his son going off to war. Apparently, though, the author, Frederic Edward Weatherley, said that when a man sang the song, the words should be "Eily dear".
Nobody's really sure where the old tune for this came from - or whether it was from Ireland or Scotland originally. I've sent you a link for some of the background and interesting theories on this haunting song.
Maybe that's part of the charm of Danny Boy, though - all of us make up our own story about who is singing, who they are singing to, what the pipes are calling for - is it war? adventure? immigration? - and, above all, why the singer should be dead when Danny/Eily returns.
Wherever the melody Londonderry Air came from, it's a beautiful song. I'd say sing it any way you like - just don't break on that last high note - or forget the words, like the Muppets.
Erin go bragh, and a happy St Patrick's Day to you.
