What's your favorite short story?

What is your current favorite and what was your childhood favorite? Who wrote these special stories? Tell me about either one, or both if you'd like.
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

My favorite short story is by Woody Allen called, "The Kugelmass Episode."

The main character wants to have an affair but he is advised against it. The man then goes to a magician who has a box that transports him into the book Madame Bovary. He then goes on to have an affair with Madame Bovary. There are many funny parts to the story in that the affair is actually being chronicled in the book at the same time. So there are English Professors and students across the world saying things like, who is this Kugelmass guy and that the mark of a good classic is that you find something new each time you read it.

At one point, Madame Bovary comes out into the real world and goes shopping in New York, so that means she is missing from the book. Finally, Kugelmass gets Madame Bovary back into the book after some trials, and swears he will never do that again. Sadly though, he can't keep his promise and goes back to the magician. However, the magician doesn't want to help him, so Kugelmass goes in on his own. Unfortunately, he doesn't wind up in Madame Bovary, but in an Introductory Spanish textbook being chased around by the hairy, irregular verb TENER. The box suffers a malfunction and Kugelmass is stuck there.

Here is a link to the story: http://litsum.com/kugelmass-episode/

I have never liked short stores much, dont' know why. They leave me wondering what happened next. I did have to read a few in school, though, so I would say my favorites would be any Edgar Allen Poe tale.

I have so many favorite short stories! One of them is "Hills Like While Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway. This very short, yet powerful, story is about a young couple grappling with the decision to have an abortion. However, the word "abortion" is never used in the story, and the topic is never directly addressed. The use of symbolism and tone is extremely powerful. Even the name of the story, "while elephants," alludes to something unspoken of. The entire story can be read here:

I also love the short stories of Joyce Carol Oates. She is brilliant.

You can read it, its only one page long! Its brilliant! funny amazing stuff...how can one page be a whole story with characters and action and humor?? Less than one thousand words!

If the link doesn't work, that's OK, just Google the title and you can download it as a document instead of html

Its by Isaac Asimov and its called " Insert Knob A in Hole B" and it was written in 1957 while he was just about to go on TV to talk about his writing - he said he could write a short story anywhere anytime so they said, OK you've got half an hour before we go live, start writing! And he did, and its great!

I have it as part of the Nighfall series ( book two if you are interested )
