What's your biggest pet peeve?

I can't stand repetitive noises, they just drive me crazy! Right below/alongside that one would be indecisive drivers (slow, no signals, stopping when turning into a gas station, etc). What's your biggest pet peeve? When do you notice it most? How do you ask/tell people to cut it out?

I cannot STAND when people butcher words.
The following are the fake words along with the correct word:

Guesstimate - should be Estimate.
Expresso - should be Espresso.
Expescially - should be Especially.
OfTen - should be Offen (forgive the spelling, but you see what I mean).
Irregardless - should be Regardless.
Simularly - should be Similarly.

And any word that a fast food chain makes up to make their fake-ass product sound "authentic" like "Gordita," or "Tortada," or "fonduta."
There are not words. These are made up bullsh#t words from some guy in a MArketing office who has no idea what he's talking about.
Please do not insult my intelligence by making your creation sound cool by giving it some stupid name that doesn't mean anything!

Okay - going to listen to my happy songs now from @coreymac's question yesterday. I'm all irritated!

@potterarchy - while I agree with you, if this is the direction the King's English is taking, I'm learning Japanese.
Actually, I might do that anyway (note, not anyways!") as I've always wanted to learn that intricate language...

My wager is the Japanese don't have words like "Fonduta" or "Guesstimate." Can we research that? I hate to make wild assumptions...

@kty2777 - I couldn't agree more! "Anyways?" REALLY? grrrr....
@thomas_k - holy moly I've heard "pacifically" too, both from a 4 year old and from a grown adult. Guess who I gave a pass to...

"Fonduta" ultimately comes from the French verb "fondre," meaning "to melt" - and its past participle "fondu" (or "fondue" - "melted"). So while it's not technically referring to a melted steak, the "liquidy" aspect has been kept. You are correct though, the point is that it's not used as literally as could be. However, take the word "literally" for example. The word is actually derived from the Latin "literalis" or "litteralis" which means "of, or belonging to, letters or writing" (which comes from the Latin "litera/littera" meaning "letter"). So originally, in Latin, "literally" wasn't used as it is today - just like "fonduta" has changed meaning. It's still generally the same concept, but not identical. There are tons and tons of these kinds of words, particularly ones we adopted from French or Latin.

Not trying to argue here, just thought I'd point that out. I do understand your point of view! :)

Without word creativity, our language would never change! If people didn't constantly make up new words, we wouldn't have moved from Old English to now. ;)

And I'll just add a few to this list because this is my pet peeve too

"off of" - the word is "from"
mostly it comes from US English. Why use two words that don't actually mean what they mean to say something that already has a good word to use, I just don't know.....and people write it here at Mahalo ALL THE TIME arghhhhh

"anyways" - the word is anyway, not plural, no 's' on the end, it's already the perfect word without having it mangled....again written here constantly.

whew...back to my own mangled form of English

seeya! hehehe

@irishstephen1974: "Fonduta"? That's an Italian word. If you object to loanwords, might as well throw out... well... 99% of our vocabulary. Almost all of it is French, Latin, Greek, etc. ;)

Aw but I like "guesstimate" and it is in the Merriam Webster dictionary I guess I have to apologize though for using the word "guesstimate" in my answer..regardless of it's being in the dictionary or not. :) Sorry'bout that.

@Buddawiggi, I just recently learned that if the word is used enough, they adpot it in. For example, "friended" is also now a word, (as in on Facebook) even tho we all know it's not a word (it's more slang than anything).
I'll forgive you old friend, but watch it.... *squinty eyes*

Does "Fonduta" mean a steak smothers in gravy at a restaraunt? I think not.
Fonduta in Itallain means "Fondue" which this is clearly not.
You're missing the point - the point is don't use words that don't apply.

Well, I just scanned the rest of the answers. Mine pet peeve is people who are perpetually late. I was going to wax eloquent about punctuality, but @buddawiggi took care of that for me, and quite nicely! I suppose I should have left my response as a comment, not an answer. But it's true! People who move to the tune of their own time frame make me crazy!

A had a client who once said, "If you make an appointment with someone and you are late, you have stolen a piece of their time that you will never be able to replace." I'll always remember this, because it is the reality of the situation.

I also know of a psychologist who feels that people who are chronically late are very "controlling." How about that? Tardy people are a pain AND unbalanced! Aha!!

I have broken up with more than one girlfriend because of chronic lateness and in business I deal with late people like I deal with jury duty.. only if the law requires me to deal with them and I will not like it.

My biggest pet peeves are those "one upper"/"know it all" people. You are telling a story and if you're lucky they wait until the end, usually they try and cut you off and tell a "better" story or "one up" you somehow.

Or you have some issue that you're talking about and they butt in with obvious solutions or useless advice.

I sit next to one of those every day at work and to top it off - she has the MOST annoying cackling laugh you have ever heard.

So, not only does she try to one-up everyone's stories and give advice one EVERY situation, she laughs like a hyena!!!

The only way I have to try and cope with her is to ignore, or contradict her advice? Nothing works!

OK, I'm glad I got that off my chest. Thanks Cory!

Not to pretend to be Dr. Oz or (pick a bogus psych), but I have been told that this behavior is indicative of incredibly low self-esteem. This is not an excuse, just a plausible explanation. I am not suggesting that you feel sorry for this individual, just wanted to let you know that you are a MUCH better person than she is!! he he

I was raised to be a responsible tree-hugging hippy-pagan nature lover.
I have recycled and picked up after myself for as long as I can remember.

Since Moving down to Alabama, I have seen some of the *trashiest areas in the US.
*Now let me also defend this blighted area. Not all of it is bad... just some parts.

People will openly litter in parks with a trash can near by.
The sides of the roads in some places resembles a dump, and their recycling program is in its infancy and costs too much money for the poor people of this area.

The only signs I see asking people not to litter are snotty and imply that littering is a 'class' issue.
"Only Trash Litters" (meaning white trash)

My feathers get ruffled quite often with this pet peeve of mine.
If this area were my native home, I'd be involved and working to change this... but since I'm an outsider, there's not much I can do, except to do my own part.

It makes me sad too @irishstephen1974 -
I recently moved to a waterfront property that is along Dog River that empties into Mobile Bay. That picture above is somewhere along Dog River. It's not my backyard, but it could be!

I will usually go down to the water around dusk and watch the Herons come flying in for the night. I'd hate to have this place turn into a sewer.
This is what I usually see from my backyard.

My pet peeve is when my older coworker tries to use poor grammer in professional e-mails to "be cool" and "get down to my level". She'll say things like "cuz" instead of "because" and "pls" instead of "please". It makes me feel like she doesn't have time to write a useful, professional e-mail to me.
She's trying to be cool, and she's not. It drives me crazy.

I get irked by people that are consistently late and have a different way of measuring time.

Like if someone says "I will be there in 15 minutes" and then shows up in 25 minutes. I would so much prefer if they foresaw possibilities of them being late they had told me so at the beginning. "I will be there in less than 30 minutes" is a much better statement and a more accurate description of their likely actions.

Its not the folks that are occasionally late and I know sometimes unforeseen events transpire that prevent us all from being on time every time, it is the people who have a measurement of time that is always off. "Ten minutes" really means "more like 30 min" and "I'll have it done today" means more like "I'll have it done when when I get to it" or We'll be there at noon" really means "We'll be there sometime after noon", these kinds of guilded lilies of time approximation are inconsiderate and I feel a bit arrogant.. I feel like the folks who underestimate the actual time of something feel their time is more important than mine.

I want truth in the reporting of time and the prediction of arrivals, completions, and deadlines not guesstimates or approximations. If someone is just truthful with the time they will be somewhere or have something done I can more accurately plan my day and lists of things to do and I respect a person who tells the truth in the reporting of time

How do I let them know this bothers me?
I stop doing any business with them, to me when people are consistently late with anything they are not really interested and I have ceased more than a few business relationships as a result of people being consistently late.

Just tell me the likely truth, I do not want to have to adapt to your measurements of time.

This is a good question for me, I have a ton of pet peeves, despite being a fairly easy going person.

1. Micromanagement: I have worked in a lot of different working environments and what galls me more than anything else is people who think that they can get better results by controlling every little aspect of another person's work. You don't need to reinvent the wheel with every single little thing that you do.

2. Argument from ignorance: I have worked in places and with people who insist that they are right even when they are totally wrong - especially when their thinking that they are right implies that I must be wrong. Defending myself against criticisms based on ignorance sometimes makes me want to punch my monitor - especially when what I am telling said person could easily be discovered in a quick web search.

3. Disagreeable people: There are some people that just look for arguments - guess what, I don't like them.

4. Hate mongers: Nazis, homophobes, and extremists of any ilk - I am live and let live sort of person; I hate all of those live and let die types.

5. Dishonesty: Someone telling the odd white lie doesn't upset me. What gets me is businesses that screw over their workers to make a few extra bucks, corporate scammers, the Madoffs of the world. They really suck.

6. Disloyalty: If you are happy to stick a knife in a friend's back you will never be a friend of mine. What I say behind a person's back is what I say to that person's face. If I like someone they know it and if I don't like someone they know it.

There are others, but those are my main ones.

I have a few pet peeves. One is lazy people. I work with someone who tries everything you can think of to get out of work. Yet...she is the first one to complain if her pay is missing a single minute or if someone else makes a mistake or how comfortable her workstation is. I say...you are paid to work...work. And don't expect me to pick up the slack for you...

Close-minded people bother me. This manifests itself in a few different ways.

People who pretend to know what people everywhere are like bother me. I have a friend who constantly says "All Germans do (x)," and I go, "No, actually, I never saw a German do (x) when I lived there," or "Yeah, I did see a couple of Germans do (x), but I don't think everyone does." Living overseas has really opened my eyes to the fact that not everyone in Germany wears lederhosen and drinks beer, not everyone in Italy likes pizza and has dark features, and not everyone in any country does anything.

I'm also a bit of a zealot about language. I try to rein it in, but linguistic prescriptivists really bother me. No offense meant at all to anyone, but after having studied as much about language as I have, I'm just at a point where trying to get people to adhere to any kind of rules when so many other languages work perfectly fine without them is exhausting. Add a bit of sociolinguistics into it, and judging other people based on their language, dialect, accent, or writing just seems so pointless. It's so amazing how much people don't know about their own language (and how much I have yet to learn about it)!

My last couple of "buttons" are somewhat related - GLBTQ and religion issues. I'm a pansexual Atheist, so I'm rather deeply opinionated about both issues. I do keep an open mind about a lot of things, but basic human rights (and logic, though I do keep an open mind about that as well) seem to be just out of grasp of a lot of people, and it bothers me.

I am open for debate. :)

The cliche' handshake.
You know the type, the hipster choreograped handshake that some people who you've never met in your life insists on trying to lay on you.

However I will make exception for this one...I can see myself giving but, not to sure i'd recieve it well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPZG2xDXg64

Call me old school but a square up look me in the eyes, firm handshake is, in my opinion, a good first impression.
