What's wrong with my 1991 Lumina's windshield wipers?

On a recent snowy day I turned on my windshield wipers and after moving just a few inches they stopped. I assumed they were frozen as often happens and shut them off. Yesterday the temperature was well above freezing but when I tried to turn them on they wouldn't move at all. I don't hear the motors come on, and I checked the fuse and it looks fine. Are there any other easy, obvious things I could be missing? I'd like to avoid a trip to the mechanic if possible. I can fix the heck out of your computer but I know basically nothing about cars.

The motor/transmission probably jammed because of the stress induced by having to move so much ice that formed in the windshield. This could have caused the motor or the fuse to blow.

Sometimes fuses look ok, but they are actually dead. So try first to replace the fuse and then see if you can hear the motor coming on. If you do, then check the motor and the transmission. See the link I provide, that shows you how the wipers actually work and look for the transmission in your car:

Sounds like the Motor is probably blown but if you are lucky the problem is simply with the linkage. The snow may have been heavy enough to break the linkage which is why it stopped on the snowy day.

There's several things that could possibly be wrong and if you're lucky the problem is mechanical/ not electrical

The cam or the worm gear could be slightly bent or out of place. Turn the wipers on and listen for any noises - if they are making some noise but not moving that's probably the case.

If there is any noise lift them of the glass, turn them on and try to move them in either direction with your hand. With a little luck you might be able to put them back in place.

If there's absolutely no noise your wiper electric motor could be toast.

See this site to understand better what I mean.

Hope this helps,
