What's with the sweet fruit on CSI:NY?

I'm not talking about a man... On the show, there was this fruit that people could eat that would make bitter things taste sweet. Supposedly it was from South America or Africa or somewhere. People were swishing the fruit around in their mouth and then eating really awful tasting things. Does something like this really exists? How can I get my hands on it?

I am a very picky eater and something like that could help me go on a diet.

It's real. They are small red berries called simply 'miracle fruit' but the scientific name is Synsepalum dulcificum. It apparently "rewires the way the palate perceives" certain flavors and therefore, can make bitter or sour foods taste sweet. The effects last between 30 minutes and 2 hours.

In the 70s, there were diet pills made of the berries. Today, there are a lot of 'flavor tripping' parties surrounding the fruit.

As for where you can buy them, lots of tropical nurseries have the plants readily available. Here is one place you can buy the entire plant:

This site has an excellent list of where the plants and even tablets can be purchased:

Synsepalum dulcificum good luck finding it.

according the the wikipedia page, the reason you've never heard of it is because the sugar industry doesn't want you to. Sounds like a 100 MPG carburetor story to me!

Flavor Tripping!!

"The miracle fruit, Synsepalum dulcificum, is native to West Africa and has been known to Westerners since the 18th century. The cause of the reaction is a protein called miraculin, which binds with the taste buds and acts as a sweetness inducer when it comes in contact with acids, according to a scientist who has studied the fruit, Linda Bartoshuk at the University of Florida’s Center for Smell and Taste. Dr. Bartoshuk said she did not know of any dangers associated with eating miracle fruit."

You can buy it on the internet
