What's the weather like in Houston?

I'm looking for something warm and sunny. Would Houston be a wise choice?

Houston is definitely warm and sunny. It also is more tropical than places like Chicago and New York.

Keep in mind that warm and sunny in a tropical setting means extreme humidity. If you live in the midwest and find yourself thinking that the air is awfully sticky, then Houston is not the best choice for you.

Today, October 22, 2010, the weather was up to nearly 90 degrees, and a little sticky. It does rain here, for sure, it is not a desert region.

Houston is a wise choice for other reasons, the activities that are available to attend are extremely diverse. There are so many different things to do and see in Houston that you may not even care about the weather.

Houston is the 4th largest city in the United States. That being said, it is pretty obvious that there is a lot of populated landscape in the city. Buildings mean concrete, concrete means heat. Fewer trees means less shade, but Houston is not for want of trees. There are beautiful parks all over the city and they have plenty of shade in open spaces with lovely breezes.

You also have the advantage of a beach less than an hour drive to the south. If you feel that Houston has gotten just a little too hot, you can drive down to Galveston and bask in the sunshine and breezes off the Gulf of Mexico. I like living here, and if you can learn to live with the humidity, you will most likely like it here too.

But, it does get cold in the winter. Most of the time it is not the biting cold of more northern cities, but I have to tell you, we had a record early snowfall in 2009. It snowed as early as December 4 for the first time in recorded history.

According to the Koppen climate classification system, Houston is classified as humid subtropical. In the spring time, supercell thunderstorms will occasionally bring tornadoes to the city. Winds from the southeast bring heat from the deserts of Mexico and moisture from the Gulf of Mexico.

During the summer in Houston, temperatures will often rise above 90 degrees, but with the humidity, the heat index is typically higher than the actual temperature. On an average summer day, the morning starts over 90 percent relative humidity and falls to about 60 percent in the afternoon.

Winters in Houston are relatively temperate. January is the coldest month with an average temperature of 63 degrees. Snowfall is rare in Houston, but the city receives an average of 54 inches of rainfall each year, with these rains often causing floods in the city.

If you're looking for warm and sunny, you are likely to find warm temperatures, but Houston does receive a large amount of rain each year, so clear skies are not a guarantee.
