What's the most unrealistic thing people commonly do in movies or TV shows?

I remember seeing a clip of Dirty Harry where he shot his "six-shooter" pistol like, 17 times without reloading. I also recall this scene in some Arnold Schwarzenegger movie where he walks through a town of about 207 people shooting automatic machine guns at him, but naturally he takes them all out in 30 seconds without getting hit once. Love it when that happens - like the hero of every action movie (Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stalone, etc) is some sort of present-day "Neo" from The Matrix.

We all have these "WTHeck" moments in movies - what are yours? What "that would never happen" thing bothers you when they do it regularly in movies or TV shows?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The speed at which issues get resolved within the legal system.
The lawyers and law on TV move way too fast to be anything close to legal reality.

The "Speedy Trial" you have the right to by the constitution is not speedy at all. Humorously speaking "speedy trial" means something like "Not Going Backwards All Of The Time"

Shows like Law & Order and all of its partner shows (SVU, Criminal Intent etc) all portray the legal system as moving at an unrealistically high speed. As anyone who has been in the legal system as a plaintiff or defendant, an officer of the court or innocent victim will tell you the law and lawyers move quite s l o w l y.

I think if we could get the cast of Law & Order, The Good Wife, The Practice, Ally McBeal, and of course Boston Legal et al all of the trouble in the US would just go away. Very rarely does the good guy get hurt or the bad guy get away and you just know if Denny Crane was on your case everything would not only be more than okay in less than one hour but you would probably have a "great time in court" <- 4 words that are never used together.

"Legal system" is Latin for "wicked freakin slow." : )

I watched the premier of Outlaw with Jimmy Smits last night and IMHO it looks like we have another speedy winner of a legal drama series.. I am easily impressed by TV shows.. opinions will vary.

The number one thing that I find most unrealistic is they always manage to find a car space right out front of the building, hotel, warehouse, police station where the action takes place!

Day or night there is always a parking spot for the cops or the crooks...

and even two spaces when car number one is being tailed by car number two and car number one pulls in and oh! so does car two...! quickly hides behind convenient truck :)

They never really eat a meal. They put food on their fork. They bring the fork to their mouths. But they never eat.

I realize that eating might require numerous takes with something that is getting colder with each take. So why have meal scenes. Just meet at coffee shops!

Every time Magnum PI jumped back in his car, no matter what island he was on he ended up on the same curvy stretch of highway on Oahu

Like you, @Coreymac, I am one of those that counts how many times a gun is fired. I think this is one of the most common unrealistic things in movies. Even when I don't necessarily know how many rounds a particular type of gun will hold, I still know darn good and well that without a larger cartridge or magazine, most pistols will not hold 25-30 rounds. In some movies and television shows, it is like the actors never run out of ammunition. Can we someone actually have to reload please? In movies where you do see someone having to reload, this can actually build suspense.

Also, I find it odd that Lassie has not aged one bit after 60+ years on television.

I would have to say, getting back together with "the love of your life" after over fifty years, and several children and grandchildren. lol I just don't see that happening in reality! I don't remember the actual name of the movie, but it is a new release in 2010,

Firing a gun and blowing up a car. Ain't gonna happen. In anime it's when the girl somehow gets naked and the guy hides his eyes or get a nosebleed.

Personally I think the most unrealistic thing is the most normal thing you see on tv, mostly in sitcoms. I read an article about the houses the people in sitcoms can affort. The man who wrote the article said that in a lot of shows people can not affort their house with the jobs.

You give an unrealistic picture. For example in one a man works at the postal service. He has a good looking girlfriend and he is quite fat. The girlfriend also works a bit. They live in a big house! With the pay they get they could not afford that house in a million years, just the cost for paying the normal bills.

I concur. In most TV shows, the housing is way out of proportion. Friends was hilarious with a coffee bar waitress renting a huge apartment in NYC. I have a couple friends there working professional jobs that have shared studio apartments!

First how a beautiful woman walks up and picks up a slob of a guy that she has fallen for at first sight.
Second how in the fake wrestling a guy jumps off a top rope and puts his knee in the other guys head and no one bleeds. They punch the guy twenty times in the head and no bloody knuckles.
