What's the most ergonomic computer desk/workstation available?

Tip for best answer: M$10.05
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The most ergonomic computer desk/workstation chair available depends on a variety of factors. Many of these factors are listed in this article.

Since everyone has a different body type, the best chair is a personal decision that can only come from testing as well as trial and error.

Generally however, the best office chairs are designed by Herman Miller and sold under the Aeron Chairs brand.

This video from the Herman Miller Show Room in San Francisco talks about the design of these chairs and their careful attention to anatomy. Herman Miller claims that sitting in these chairs actually _improves_ the health of the person sitting in it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4DnyGofgJw

Personally, I recommend that you visit a variety of stores. Many stores allow you to test a chair out for a minimum of a week (usually 30 days) to ensure that it is perfect. Making an investment in a chair is a reasonable and worthwhile investment for anyone who spends more than an hour or two sitting.

For your review, other relevant articles include:

We have Aeron Chairs at Mahalo currently... really need desks to go with it.

I heard some guy on some podcast say that it is wise to buy cheap desks and expensive chairs.

However, here's a suggestion if you do buy new desks... put large wheels on a few of them. Folks will move them around at will and this will foster small groups to combine and work together when needed.

I second the Herman Miller Aeron Chair. I bought one new at full price for my home office and have no regrets. It doesn't feel much better than other chairs however after hours of use it leaves my back far less fatigued.

The desk though, that seems all about desk height.

I think I would be too nervous to use this thing...I'd flinch everytime I heard the slightest noise thinking it would hit me right in the face. Very awesome though.

Your question is a little vague, but I'll try to help with a little bit of suggestion. Try a consultant firm like humantech because ergonomics depends largely on WHO the desk is for and WHAT they are doing with it. It also depends on how many employees there are, the sex, age, size, height, and optical quality of said employees, and preferences. Consultants will be able to match workers with the right office furniture, but you absolutely must look at the reputations and reviews of firms. Some of them get extra cash for recommending a pricier work station. If you can't afford a consultant, consider an adjustable station like those from bostontech or proline. Good luck!

Hi Jason,
I believe you are friends with Joel Spolsky from Stack Exchange. In the video of a tour of his office he shows some cool desk that is electric and can raise up to standing level.

I think this is ideal. Spend part of the day on your feet.

I think Joel's were Steelcase if memory serves. We went w/GeekDesk (www.GeekDesk.com) mainly because they were a lot less expensive, but they are very well made desks and the company seemed quite responsive to our pre-purchase questions.

The most ergonomic computer desk/workstation available today is:::

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfe-kyQiYcg

What makes this a winner is its adjustability. The more you can change and shift things to fit the human body instead of the other way around, the less technology will inter-fear with what your brain is trying to do. That said, this combination would be greatly improved if the Envelop table was adjustable electronically by the user on the fly, and big enough for todays monitors.
http://www.webpagescreenshot.info/img/219976-1221201013515AM.JPG

Personally I like a desk with big giant flat areas. The bigger the better, round would be OK as long as it is the proper height for my chair. Most of these worker stations that I found to answer this question, can ruin your eyes if you are to close to the monitors. If you have the luxury of space, bigger is better, is the safest way to go.
http://www.webpagescreenshot.info/img/949676-12212010125941AM.JPG

The viewing distance from your eyes to your monitor, or TV for that matter should be 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen width for the best picture. This is much closer than the seven times the width to avoid radiation damage to to your eyes from the old cathode ray tubes, but it still means that with todays larger monitors that you need to move further back, no amount of radiation is safe. The sensitivity of today's state-of-the-art measuring equipment is still considerably inferior to that of living cells. A computer screen that is switched off continues to radiate for several hours afterward, even if you pull the plug. At a minimum the FDA advises sitting a distance of at least two to three feet from the screen to limit exposure.

Screen size: http://www.crutchfield.com/learn/videos/HDTV/screen-size.html
Radiation: http://www.emfbioshield.com/arecrt.html

TV will look its best when viewed straight-on, at a height where your eyes are level with the middle of the screen so you may want an adjustment on the height of your monitor to go with your adjustable fully loaded chair and table. If you can, take room lighting into consideration when choosing a spot for your station. It's best to have a little bit of light shining on the wall behind your monitor. Using dimmers you can control your background lighting which helps give the black portions of the picture a deeper, darker look.

To sum it up, the most ergonomic computer desk/workstation available today will deal with screen, table, and chair size, as well as the size of the room and available lighting, relative to the body size of the user. The more everything is adjustable the harder it will be to find the optimal mix without experts. The less things are adjustable the more the user will have to adapt to the technology instead of the other way around as it should be.

I would go with the aeron chair w/o the arms installed ($600) and the the galant desk with the drawer ($180) from IKEA. for lighting you can use the sun or go with a petzl headlamp in case you choose to adjust your body posture during extended study. more important than any desk/chair combo is body posture and environment. extended sitting will mess up your hip flexors. ambient noise level should be minimized but any level of ambient noise would be preferable over intermittent noise. also make sure the phone is off. also make sure audio alerts are disabled on outlook or thunderbird or whatever email client you use.

cheers,
Christopher Fetterman

That would depend on exactly what the most ergonomic desk & workstation would be to you. Are you looking into purchasing ergonomic desks/workstations for a workplace environment where more than one person would be using them, or are you searching for something just for yourself

Many different choices in terms of ergonomic options exist as far as office furniture which combines functionality with comfort.

The most ergonomic one would be the one that would be the most user-friendly and efficient in terms of your needs. Try taking a look at this checklist before making an workstation purchase decision:
