What's the most cost-effective solar energy system (by cost-per-kilowatt) available for a home today?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

This is not as easily answerable as it sounds. The most cost-effective system depends upon many factors. The most important in evaluating this cost is the amount of energy that you use as well as how much sunlight your home receives. Once these two things are figured out, you can then apply them to the various solar energy systems, allowing you to have a more accurate determination of which would be most cost-effective for your needs. For more detailed information on determining these first, see www.renewableenergybug.com

The most cost-effective solar energy system doesn't create electricity at all. Solar energy used to heat water for the home, also known as solar thermal has a much faster payback than solar photovoltaic (electricity) systems. Find out more: http://www.dasolar.com/solar-energy/solar-thermal

Thanks for the info but I am still looking for a best-of-breed either system or type of solar panel on the market today. I suspect there are at least a few clear leaders out there somewhere that one can purchase on the open market. If not, the whole solar energy thing is just sunk.

There is actually a company called citizens energy that will allow you to setup a plan with them where they will put a solar system up for you and lease it from you. I'm not quite sure how the system works but they put up the system and pay for it or atleast a large portion of it. just something to look into maybe.
