Inc. is short for for incorporated. This is what happens when a business brings all its separate units together under one corporate umbrella. To become incorporated means that the company has gone through the required legal procedures to become a corporation. A corporation can be non-profit making, such as a sports club, or (hopefully) a profit making business.
To be incorporated means that the operators are shielded from the liabilities of their actions.
