Inc. is short for for incorporated. This is what happens when a business brings all its separate units together under one corporate umbrella. To become incorporated means that the company has gone through the required legal procedures to become a corporation. A corporation can be non-profit making, such as a sports club, or (hopefully) a profit making business.
To be incorporated means that the operators are shielded from the liabilities of their actions. Incorporation, in effect, turns the company into an individual, one that can be sued and declare bankruptcy, etc, while the owners of the company do not suffer personally from loss of property or finance.
It is fairly easy to incorporate a small business, you go to the business office in your state, fill out an application, pay your filing fee, and pick your new corporate name.
