What's the last really great, wow-worthy movie you've seen?

It's been a long time since I've seen a truly incredible movie (then again, it's been about two years since I've even been to a theater!) What were some of the last movies you've seen that truly rocked your world? For me, I remember being blown away by Fight Club and touched by Big Fish. After those flicks, it's harder for me to pinpoint awesomeness. So ... enlighten me!

Personally, I'd say Pan's Labyrinth. When I finished watching that movie, it left me the feeling that I had just watched something truly special, original, and imaginative. Pan's Labyrinth has since become my favorite movie of all time.

Although if you're looking for something more mainstream, I was wowed by The Dark Knight, as I believe most people were. I'm a big comic book fan, and I always hoped comic book movies would someday cease to be derivative movies, and The Dark Knight really changed the genre for the better.

And as I child I recall being wowed by Jurassic Park. I was eight and when I saw that Brachiosaurus reach for the top of that tall tree, I was as astonished as the characters on screen. That movie sparked a life long love of dinosaurs.

For me, it was Disney-Pixar's "Wall-E>." I remember going in to the movie, fearing it would cross that line into "cute" or "precious" and being utterly blown away how the film used sound, music, and silence in poignant ways. At the time of its release, several critics had pointed out how "Wall-E" seemed very Chaplin-esque – high praise indeed. Before seeing the film I thought they must be exaggerating. But after seeing the film once, and going on to see it several times, I now think that was even a bit of an understatement. In a field of strong animation, especially in recent years, "Wall-E" continues to top my list. Not just as a fine animated film, but a fine film period. It's truly a movie for film lovers.

(And to put this in perspective, I speak as a person who deeply appreciates "Fight Club," "Pan's Labyrinth," "Memento," "Run Lola Run," "The Dark Knight," "Eternal Sunshine," "There Will Be Blood" and a host of darker or more "adult" movies as well.)

Although I must also add, the montage in Disney-Pixar's "Up" is also one of the strongest sequences I've seen in recent years!

I would say Thirst, which is a Vampire film directed by Chan Wook Park. While people are going crazy for Twilight, here's a film that reminds us how nasty vampires really are.

A man of faith becomes what is basically equal to a vampire when he undergoes an experimental procedure. If you want to see it, I will save the rest of the details

Serenity. It's a movie based on a short-lived TV show by Joss Whedon.

It's an amazing story, full of action, humor, and shocking sadness. It kinda has a Star-Wars vibe to it, too.

And the first time Serenity, the spaceship, comes into frame, it's amazing. It's like watching a stunning woman enter a room, and it takes your breath away.

Now, keep in mind I was a fan of the TV show, so that may have influenced my opinion a bit. However, "Rotten Tomatoes" says of it: "Snappy dialogue and goofy characters make this Wild Wild West soap opera in space fun and adventurous."

Avatar is an amazing film, it's quite long but has just been released on DVD. I was told by friends that it was good but it really surpassed my expectations. It was a masterpiece!

Although I very rarely go to the theater anymore I do get to watch many great movies (and some not so great) from the comfort of my home.

I watched ''Avatar'' a few days ago and even though it wasn't in 3D it was still an excellent movie. I can imagine that it must have been even better in 3D! I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was different, had a very interesting storyline and I think it was very well done.

Last year I had heard about an independent film called Ink. The premise being an adult fantasy intrigued me so I watched it... and loved it! It was my favorite indie film in years. What impressed me more than anything was that the same guy (Jamin Winans) wrote, directed, produced, edited and musically scored the film. The fact that a low-budget indie film could blow me away when current commercial films have not was the "Wow!" moment for me.

I'm not even 40, but I don't go for the animated stuff. If you want awesomeness, the music by Harry Connick Jr (one of his first releases was this soundtrack) and the main message of "When Harry Met Sally" will still keep me glued to my seat--20 years later. And it has nothing to do with Meg Ryan at the deli.

The second clip is of all of the love stories spread out as breaks through the movie.

The third clip--sam year, 1989 (freshman and sophomore years of college for me): Michelle Pfeiffer singing "More than You Know" in "The Fabulous Baker Boys/" Makin' Whoopee" was even better. He actually played the piano and she actually sang.

Nor so tech but my wow worthy faves.

I loved How to Train your Dragon if you want something recent. I hate Dreamworks and I think they put out a lot of junk, but this movie is SOLID. Great characters, plot, overall story predictable but enough side twists to make getting their so enjoyable. That is something you can go watch at the theatre.

But if you want recent and epic like Fight Club where you leave with your mind blown, I really like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Good movie. Pick it up.

For me it was The Blind Side. it is a fabulous movie that is touching and makes you think about how much impact people have on the lives of others. Plus it helps that Sandra Bullock is my favorite!

The most recent that I have seen were Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderful, he's a real love/hate director and I am in the love team! He never fails to WOW me! I also loved How To Train Your Dragon.

The recent Sherlock Holmes movie was quite well-done, I thought. I always find the best character traits of the protagonist infectious, so I loved being surrounded by good wit and intelligence - despite how long the movie was.

I also, regrettably, loved "Paranormal Activity." It's just my genre.
http://mysterycreature.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/paranormal-activity.jpg

But the last really great "wow" movie ("wow" meaning I was glued to the screen and felt touched by the end of it), was "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium," that just recently aired on ABC Family. I know, I know, it's a kid's movie - but it has a lot to say about how boring we adults have become. (Plus, I love Dustin Hoffman - he does "quirky" better than Johnny Depp.)

I also must heartily suggest the Japanese "Grudge" series. As usual, the Americans have done an iffy job of the remake, but the original Japanese version gives some life and soul to a ghost story that Americans just can't seem to grasp. Plus, every storyline is out of order, so it's fun trying to piece everything together in the end. (The official order of the series is "Juon: The Curse 1," "Juon: The Curse 2," "Juon: The Grudge 1," "Juon: The Grudge 2" - the "Curse" series is a bit old, and the camerawork slightly shoddy, but quite good.) Here's the trailer for "Juon: The Grudge 1":

No kidding. And all the places you go to feel safe after watching a scary movie - like under the covers - pffft, gone. I still get creeped out if there's a lump in my bed.
