What's the easiest way to cutback on unnecessary or empty calories when dining out?

My family goes out to dinner pretty often and I'm starting to feel the effects of french fries and buffalo wings. What are some of the best ways to cut back on extra calories or unhealthy eating when dining at restaurants or fast food joints?

First of all, stay away from the deep-fried foods! Most restaurants offer healthier options to the traditional menu items. Have a salad instead of french fries, baked fish (for example) instead of breaded and fried, have fruit instead of cookies for dessert; replace the soda with ice tea, lemonade, or milk. If you have to have a deep-fried meal, don't supersize it!

One source of empty calories are from the soda's that we get at these places. Either stop drinking soda with the dinner or drink diet.
There are side salads available at all fast food restaurants that will have a lot less calories than french fried foods. I know it is hard, I have had to change my way of eating as well and these little ideas have helped me out a lot.

At a fast food restaurant:
Just have the sandwich. Skip the side dish.

At a sit down restaurant:
Ignore the bread dish when they bring it.
I like the other poster's suggestion of only eating half of what is on your plate, and planning on taking the other half home to have for lunch tomorrow.

In general:
Only drink water, diet soda, coffee or tea with no sugar added.
Skip dessert.
Avoid deep fried food if possible (french fries, fried chicken).
Order salad dressing on the side. Dip a fork of salad in the dressing, and take as little as possible.
Avoid creamy sauces.

I agree that many fast food restaurants now have salad choices but I know from experience that can get old fast. Some also offer grilled chicken sandwiches which you could take the top half of the bun off to cut calories even more. Have this either alone or pair it with a small salad and stay away from the fries.

There are many ways you can cut the health cost of a delicious meal. Stay away from fried foods. Do not eat the "free" bread. Order water instead of soda. Skip dessert. Ask for a doggie bag or to go box, and place half the portion in there, and eat what you have remaining.
Try to avoid creamy sauces, and while salads are good for you, the sloppy dressing oozing all over is not. Skip it. Try a vinagrette.
