What's the difference between social studies and history?
Aren't they simply two different ways of naming the same class?

Not exactly. History is the study of past events. Usually when we say "history," we're implying the history of humans, but you could also say Art History or Natural History for example. Human history is a type of social studies.
Social Studies is concerned with any aspect of human society. That includes human history, but also a bunch of other stuff like psychology, economics, human geography and more.
I know it's kind of a technical answer, but your question is kind of a technical one. Hope that helps to clarify things for you.
