What's the difference between religion and cults?

How can I tell if a church I attend is really a cult? How can I help someone I think is involved with a cult?

I’ve never studied theology.

The big difference between a religion and a cult is the way the two groups view God. All religions see God as someone who loves and who wants followers of the faith to love everyone, to see each other as brothers and sisters. All cults skew this version of God in some way. The ways most cults skew a belief in God is that they either teach their followers that the cult leader is God or that God wants them to kill or hurt others who threaten the existence of the cult.

From Wikipedia.org

The word cult pejoratively refers to a group whose beliefs or practices are considered strange.

You can tell if a church you attend is really a cult by looking at the way the church teaches you to see God or the church’s leader. If the leader wants you to believe he is God or that you should hurt anyone who threatens your beliefs, your church is a cult.

It is extremely difficult to help someone you think is involved in a cult. Most people who get involved with cults believe the cult beliefs so strongly, it’s hard to convince them they should leave it. The best you can do is to respect their viewpoints and to continue to show brotherly love to the person.

Good luck to you! I hope you found this information helpful.
