M$Others, however, insist that hip-hop is a musical style distinct from rap, for very specific reasons: mainly hip-hop has a particular beat and uses scratching and “breaks” (samples). They claim rapping over a soul or heavy metal track could never be hip-hop. In other words, these folks say all hip-hop is rap, but not all rap is hip-hop."

IMO hip-hop is the music and rap is the lyrics, I cant describe it any other way better, it's just how it feels. If a DJ played out some beats and scratches, even without the lyrics people would say "Thats hip-hop." And in vocals using lyrics that ryhme wheteher there sis a message or not, is IMHO what I would call rapping. I can see why people have a hard time distinguishing the difference and mainstream record labels have probably no clue what defines each either, but I can see why that comment from blogcritics.org was stated. Music, with or without lyrics moves you, so it feels like your living it and rapping is just a person voicing out so it just feels like something you do. Sorry if that didnt make sense -.-
