It is easy to understand how the two terms, used loosely, have come to mean the same thing. Drama was the ancient medium used for staging stories long before film was even possible. Now that we have newer methods of bringing stories to the masses, we have many different kinds of film. Drama now refers to a specific kind of production, especially as it relates to film. Drama means a type of film that usually has a serious topic, one in which the main character will struggle against a seemingly intractable force, one which he may or may not overcome. While there may be some humor in the presentation for relief, there won’t be much. Film encompasses more than just drama, namely comedy, documentary, instructional/how-to videos and many other forms. But since it all started out under the broad title of drama, we may still refer to it in that fashion, even today.
