Domestic means it occurs in a home. Assault is when you threaten someone, like for instance by showing a knife or pointing a pistol at them. Battery is when you actually make contact with a weapon or with your personal physical force and cause injury. If you attack and make contact, then you are automatically charged with assault and battery. If you threaten a person and don't make contact, you can be charged only on the account of assault.
A defense against assault and battery is where one can prove certain that there was a clear intention to cause harm. This would be a self-defense claim and it must be proven without a reasonable doubt.
In some states, assault is defined as making physical contact. (Ohio)
For specific legal definitions, it may be best to find out the laws of the state that you live in.

Indeed, the assault can be a 'verbal assault', battery is when physical violence is involved.
Many states and countries are doing away with the distinction, and they are all considered 'assaults'
