When I began growing flowers in my garden, I didn't care if I planted an annual, perennial or biennial or half hardy annual or frost tender annual or tender perennial. I just planted marigolds and zinnias!* But if you are planning and designing your flower garden, ordering from a catalog, or researching your seed starting requirements, you may need to know these definitions.
What is an Annual Flower:

An annual grows from seed and blooms and sets seed and then dies in just one growing season. Petunia and marigold are examples of flowers widely grown as annuals. Annuals need to be replanted each spring. Most annuals bloom continuously from spring through fall.
What is a Perennial Flower:

A perennial flower lives for three or more seasons. It may or may not be mature enough to bloom the first year from seed. (Hint: P is for Permanent and for Perennial). Perennials will need periodic rejuvenation and/or replacement, typically every three to five years. Most perennials bloom for only a short period -- a week or two or three -- once a yearBoxing the octopusmarketing soutions home business blog

Before growing flowers a majority of people did not know if they have planted an annual, perennial or tender perennial plant. All they say is they have planted a marigold plant. But if you know the difference between these terms you can turn your garden to haven! The function of the annual is to grow from seed, blooms, set its seeds and dies in just one growing season.

All annuals are to be replanted each spring. Some examples of annual are marigold and Petunia, while perennial flowers have the capability to live for three or more seasons. It is not necessary that perennials, which need periodic rejuvenation i.e. every three to five years, may mature till they bloom in the first season or not. Most of the perennials bloom for a short duration.

Other facts you might learn in your botany class include many flowers are not flowers at all! Flower pertaining to Indian paintbrush is often invisible i.e. hidden inside the brightly colored leaves and sepals etc.

Hi @12keylime, there are so many things you can learn in a botany class, and the difference between an annual and perennial plant is just one of the numerous topics you would come across in the class.

The main difference between an annual plant and a perennial plant is in the lifespan. An annual plant complete its whole lifecycle within a year and nothing more , while the lifecycle of the perennial plant last more than two years; it might stay as long as fifteen years of even longer. But be aware that some perennials plants are grown in some places as annual plants for convenience.

Some examples of annual plant includes; peas, corn, lettuce, watermelon, wheat and rice. Perennial plants includes; Tomato (usually grown as annuals in some places), Bell Peppers and Sweet Potato.

There are plants that complete their lifecycle in two years, these plants are known as biennial plants and an example is the parsley.

Hello @keylime, the difference between annual and perennial plant is in their life cycle in a year. Annual plants complete their life cycle in a year while perennial plants live for over two years.

Annual plants may have a life cycle for any duration under a year while some have life cycles of only a few weeks. Perennials may live for just a few years or for well over 20 depending upon the species of plant.
True annual plants are those that naturally complete their life cycle in under a year.

Perennial plants are very diverse and have woody stems and hardier than annual plants. They have evolved structures that enable them to survive for many years like bulbs and rhizomes.

Annuals and perennials are garden flowers. Annual flowers are planted and come up in the spring. They are gorgeous flowers in bloom. Their lifespan is from spring to fall. The only way to preserve annual garden flowers is to dig them up and replant in flower pots to be placed indoors during the fall and winter season.

Perennials are garden flowers that return year after year. This is partly due to the seedlings that the flowers drop in fall. It is amazing how perennials seedlings can handle the cold of winter and reemerge in the spring.
