What's the difference between a squid and an octopus?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

They are both Head-footed animals both in the Mollusc family (Cephalopoda), even though they both don't have a shell. There are several distinctions that can be made to set apart an octupus from a squid, however:
-Shape, body, form:
*Octopuses usually have a round-like head, while squid have an oblong, flat-like head.
*Octopuses grow from one centimeter in size to a possible 5 meters, while Squids can grow from that same centimeter to 20 meters in size.
*Octopuses have eight tentacles while squids have 8 arms and two tentacles they use for capturing their prey (food).
*Octopuses have no physical bones located in their bodies, while squids have pen ("hard, flexible structure") which acts like a backbone supporting their physcial structure.
-Habitat, behavior:
*Octopuses generally live on the sea's floor, in caves due to being more solitary creatures; while squids swim freely throughout the open sea in schools.
*Octopuses feed on sea level crustaceans, while squids feed on fish and crustaceans in the open sea such as shrimp.
*When spawning octupuses guard their eggs until they hatch, while squids die after spawning.
*Octopuses generally have a shorter life-span than that of a squids, surviving in the window of 6 months to 5 years while squids can survive up to 9 months to 5 years.
Please follow my sources for more in depth or additional information on the differences and similiarities of Squids and Octopuses, hopefully my synopsis helped you identitify plausable differences between the two molluscs. Feel free to ask anything additional and I'll try my best to answer.
