What's the difference between 1080i and 1080p?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The 'i' in 1080i stands for "interlaced" while the 'p' in 1080p stands for "progressive".

Basically what this means is that in interlaced, the screen actually only displays every other line of the image and counts on the fact that it's so fast that you won't notice half the lines are missing for a split second.

Progressive, on the other hand, renders every line, every time for a much smoother looking image.

Here is an example of what the image looks like during that split second:

The best answer is really to read the source that this article links to. The explanation is clear. The only thing to note is that the article was written in 2005, so pricing is way off.
