What's the cheapest way to move a 1BR apartment's worth of furniture across the country?

I'm looking to move a sectional couch, bed, TV, TV stand, clothes, kitchen table and kitchen supplies from NH to CA. I'm looking or the cheapest way to do so.
Tip for best answer: M$2.50

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

No, No, No.....Don't rent a truck....that will run you about a $1000 plus gas. I have moved from the east coast to the west (and back) I spent a lot of time researching this. You are looking to do searches for companies called pod rentals or container storage. The company comes and drops off what looks like an oversized refridgerator in front of your house.....it is a big container that you pack with all your stuff. You lock it up with your own lock. they pick it up. and deliver it to your new place whenever you like them to. They will usually have "runs" on pre-planned dates. So you may not get an exact date you request but you will get pretty close. Then you can take your sweet time driving your car across the country and enjoying all of the amazing cities and national parks along the way. From my experience this is the cheapest. There are a lot of these companies so compare prices with all that you can find here's the most popular. http://www.pods.com/

Thanks for this suggestion! I wasn't too familiar with these types of services but it seems like it might be the cheapest.

Start out by checking the distance. Since you did not specify cities, I assume you're moving from e.g. Nashua to Santa Monica. According to http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1c=Nashua&1s=NH&1y=US&1l=42.765301&1g=-71.468102&1v=CITY&2c=Santa+Monica&2s=CA&2y=US&2l=34.019402&2g=-118.490303&2v=CITY this is a 46 hour drive. If you drive about 8 hours a day, this will take 6 days, which is important to know because it will affect pricing. You should add a day at each end to load/unload the truck, making it 8 days. To price things out I assumed this would be from 12/17/09 to 12/24/09.

At http://www.budgettruck.com/Truck.aspx they quote $1394.10 for a 10' truck from Nashua to Santa Monica. You'd have to pay extra if you're towing a car, but you did not mention a car, so I did not price it out.

Penske https://www.pensketruckrental.com/application.html quotes $1539 for the same dates and locations. If you're a AAA member you will get a 12% discount from that, coming to $1354.32.

U-Haul http://reservations.uhaul.com/resweb01/Summary.aspx quotes $1667 for the move with a 10' truck, and provides 11 days rental based on the distance.

Ryder only rents out trucks if you return them to the same location, so they're out for this run.

The bottom line is that Budget is likely your best bet, unless you're a AAA member, in which case Penske is slightly cheaper.

Keep in mind you need to budget for other expenses, some of which you can simply do yourself and save money at the expense of your time and effort, or accepting risk.

- Boxes and packing supplies
- Insurance for the truck
- Movers to pack your stuff
- Movers to load the truck
- Movers to unload the truck
- Fuel for the truck
- Meals along the way
- Accommodations along the way

Wow! Great answer @opher. I just moved 5 states less than a year ago and those prices are dead on.

Mike - the only way I can see this getting any cheaper would be to get rid of your couch and bed (the two big items) and rent an smaller cargo van as I did. Regardless, It'll be a long move. Drive safely and take your time!

Thanks @bunnyphuphu.

Mike, another option similar to what some have suggested (including @bunnyphuphu) would be to sell the furniture, package the clothes and kitchen stuff, and ship those UPS Ground. For a 100 lbs box they charge just under $100 (there are some limits on box sizes so you'd need to plan how to mix high-density items such as books with lower density items such as clothes in each box). If you only have 200 or 300 lbs, you could have those in Santa Monica in 5 days for under $300. Of course if you have a car and are driving, you could reduce the price further by putting some or all of the stuff in the trunk. If you have no car, you just need to add the cost of a plane, train, or bus ticket (depending on how desperate you are to save money and how willing to spend time to save it) to get yourself to California.

Sell everything that will not fit in the back seat of your car, buy new (used) stuff in CA.

Jonno is absolutely right. Thirteen years ago I moved from upstate NY to southern CA. Moved 92 boxes and furniture. The first 18 months that I lived in California, I only ended up unpacking 20 of the boxes and ultimately ended up replacing all but 3 items of furniture. By the time I moved to my second residence, I got rid of nearly all the unopened boxes (the only things I saved were photo albums, and the like) and had replaced nearly all my clothes (kept my ski jacket and a pair of boots). Had I just sold everything and shipped the 20 boxes, I would have probably saved close to $3000 in moving fees.

My suggestion is this.

Since you only have a minimal amount to move. Most big moving companies will offer a smaller charge if you share a truck with another cross country move.
You would be given a delivery date depending on where on the truck your stuff is. You will have either one or more other peoples stuff on the truck and it would be loaded based on the drop off of each customer. I would guess that it would not be to hard to find a company willing to do this.

The cheapest way to move besides doing it yourself with some friends is to go to http://www.movingnation.com . They do a fantastic job and I would recommend them to anyone looking for a very affordable moving company.

Rent a Uhaul. One of their perks is you don't have to return it to the same place.

Or maybe sell all your stuff and not have to move it at all. When you get to your location visit a second hand furniture store. You would save gas and not have to worry about your stuff being stolen along the way.

And get free boxes for clothes, and little stuff at the state liq.uor store and grocery stores (banana boxes work great with holes on the side for handles).

Too bad I missed this one--you probably already moved. I'm a former furniture store owner who moved halfway across the country and got off a plane to go to a house full of boxes I'd shipped there. Shipping companies, inclusing USPS, are invaluable.

Be careful of moving companies, they are notorious for bad business, get referrals, check yelp and other online "user feedback" websites if you're going to hire someone to move your stuff.

Personally I'd just sell it and give the rest to Goodwill (or equivalent) -tax write-off. Then buy new furniture in your new place, there's a lot of good furniture deals today because of the economy.

Unless the stuff is really special in some way, you might spend more to move it than the items are worth. Have you considered just selling and re-buying it on the other side?

If you are doing the move yourself to save money, you're looking at the cross country trip, cost and labor to do that. It's a couple of days and may be worth the effort and expense. However, if you are hiring a professional moving company, they would most likely fit your stuff in with other people's because it isn't worth it to run a truck to the west coast only a quarter or half full. You might have some delays on that end. In addition, you have the cost of getting yourself over there.

If you can get new or used items of similar quality for a comparable price, you might save yourself the headache of packing it all up, transporting, and unpacking on the other side.

I know this doesn't quite answer your question - other people seem to have done that pretty well. I just wanted to throw this out to give you an alternate idea.

Best of luck on the move.
