What's the cheapest way to call home(US) when on a Mediterranean Cruise and/or in Europe?

Me and my fiancee are going on a Mediterranean Cruise for our honeymoon in Sept of this year(2010). We will definitely be wanting to call back home a few times and I'm wondering what the cheapest way to do this is. Prepaid cell phone? Prepaid phone card? If we take a laptop are there a decent amount of wi-fi hot spots for Skype? Any ideas would be great, thanks! More details on the cruise/stops below.

*A side note, we currently use Verizon Wireless as our wireless carrier, with no intention of changing, so a European SIM isn't an option. But if that is the cheapest way, I might be able to get my hands on an iPhone. Only want to do this if there are no other cheap alternatives.

These are the stops we will be making. The cruise leaves from Barcelona, Spain, then head clockwise around the map. Would like for it to at least work in Spain, Italy, and Sicily, if possible. But, all of them would be amazing if possible. Again, looking for the cheapest way to do this.

Itinerary
Day 1 Barcelona (Spain)
Day 2 Marseille (France)
Day 3 Savona (Italy)
Day 4 Naples (Italy)
Day 5 Palermo (Sicily)
Day 6 Tunis (Tunisia)
Day 7 Palma De Mallorca (Spain)
Day 8 Barcelona (Spain)

Buy yourself a prepaid SIM card and cell phone once you get to Spain. My recommendation is Vodafone. If you currently have a smartphone or one that takes a SIM card, then you may be able to get temporary global access through your provider.
Access may be spotty at sea but in port you should have no problem calling the rest of Europe and the US.
Many Costa ships now have WiFi for more connectivity too.
Bon voyage!

Hey, @colecchi.

If you want a different method than skype or google voice. You can use a pay phone or a cell phone, just make sure to dial the international ID number, and the country code you want to connect to (plus the area code and phone number).

To do this, you will need these codes. For the US, Canada and most Caribbean islands, the code for an international call is 011. I'm not sure on other countries, but this site should be extremely helpful for you. All you have to do here is type in the country and phone # you want to dial, and the country you are calling from, and it will tell you how to call it!

Also, this is a helpful site, which will give you country codes and international codes if you want to get a basic knowledge of how international calls work before you head off to the great unknown! Hope this was helpful, and have fun!

You could certainly apply for or request a invite from users of Google Voice. (I maintain this page)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOZU7BOeQ58

They have some excellent international rates.

Spain $0.02

France $0.02

Italy / Sicily $0.02

Tunisia $0.09

And ofcoars all GoogleVoice to GoogleVoice calls are always free.

If you need any further help dont be afraid to ask.

I have a Google Voice account, but I don't really use it too much right now. How would that work when I am over there? How would I make a call from there to here?

Sorry, I guess I need to be a little more specific. Can I just use a pay phone? Do I need to have a Cell Phone that works over there(I don't have one)? What other phone options are there?

Skype. It can call land-line or cell phones from the internet. It will also call other computers with Skype for free. If you're going to have internet access with wi-fi, you can either obtain or borrow an ipod touch and download the Skype application. These devices are very easy to carry and use. The device has no on-board mic, so you will need to buy a stereo headset with a microphone, or other type microphone device for the ipod, which can be easily found on ebay. The typical rate to Spain, for example, is less than $0.03 per minute.

Here are the list of Skype rates.

Most of the recommendations here are all good and I would not speculate on more answers. If you can have access to the internet, any service, such as Skype, GVoice or MSn (if your folks have an account back home), all this will work. In Europe most major cities like in Spain and in Italy have Wi-Fi hot spots. They will normally be located in large commercial centers. There is also the option of looking for "cyber-cafes" or "Internet Stores" where you can normally make phone calls for a very cheap price. Ultimately, you can look for portable broadband (USB) internet connections that are normally offered for temporary visitors in the airport, dock or again in malls or shopping centers.

Have a look at these and you can go from there:

Hope this helps, good luck and happy cruising.

I also agree with Skype and Gtalk but have you taken the time to ask the Cruise line if they offer free calls? Some of them do.

Colechi, If you would have access to the internet on your trip, just go to internetcalls.com. Download it just like you did for skype, and you call all US numbers both landline and cell phone for FREE

International virtual calling card is a great option. When you are out of calling minutes, you can recharge the card online using the account you set with your provider. beside you will only pay for the minutes you actually use. Check your local phone company if they offer this card.
