What's the best website or paper or book on SEO for a novice?

Looking for something to give to someone who is not too technical, which will explain how Google and other search engines rank sites, and what can be done to improve rankings, etc. Please -- NOT looking for consultants etc. just a fairly simple document or site that I can share.
Tip for best answer: M$5.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

As stated above, http://seomoz.org and http://seobook.com blogs are both excellent sources of information. Another great place to keep track of is http://sphinn.com which is like Digg for SEOs.

If you're looking for the very basics of SEO, Google has released an SEO guidelines manual. The .pdf can be found at the following Google search link: http://www.google.com/search?hl=all&q=google+search+engnie+optimization+starter+guide&btnG=Search it should be the first result.

This guy here might be a bit of a jerk sometimes, but he really knows his stuff. Read the archives of his blog and learn from him:

2)
SEO Book is the go to website for many online marketing folks. Their training product and blog has helped a lot of folks start out:

3)
Read the articles and tutorials here: http://www.searchengineguide.com/

4)
Listen to the SEO podcasts at http://www.webmasterradio.fm/ Folks regularly discuss the basics and review current trends on these shows. While not a definitive source, these regular podcasts are good to keep you "in the know".

I hope that these things start to help you out. I often refer to SEO as a game of chess. It's easy to learn the layout of the board and memorize a few strategies but once you really start playing the game, there are a lot of subtleties that can only really be learned through competition.

Just know that real SEO isn't about "tricks" or games. It's about creating clean, standards compliant pages and helping search engines to properly identify, categorize and index those pages.

There are lots of great answers here. If you are looking to become more advanced in SEO for all search engines not just Google. (Keep in mind outside North America Google does trail) Have a look at http://www.sitesubmit.ca It has lots of good information from beginner to advanced, with exams, news articles, tech articles, etc. I have found this site very useful and Highly recommend it.

http://www.seomoz.org is hands down the best novice SEO site.

It has two blogs, a daily SEO blog and a community based blog called Youmoz, where users post their own opinions on SEO.

Seomoz is great because you can always find the basics there, and learn slowly you will take advantage of the medium to advanced advice that is also transmitted. In my experience it is the best site to start and it you keep coming back, until you have learned enough and then you can transition into other sites, such as Search Engine Land and others.
