If the patient is vomiting, hydration is always a difficult task. Keep the patient on clear liquids until there has not been any vomiting for some time, if the vomiting is persistent I like 12-24 hours. Every 20 mins the patient should be drinking about 1-2 ounces. Chicken broth and gatorade mixed 1/2 and 1/2 with water are both good.
It the patient is not vomiting the BRAT(Y) diet can help. Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, yogurt. Hydration is very important, even if the patient is not vomiting. Diarrhea and fever each alone can cause dehydration.
