Whats the best way to trace your family tree?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The best way to trace your family tree would to be to ask your family members about it. If this is not an option there are websites such as ancestry.com MyHeritage.com.

Here are some ways to trace your family tree:

• Begin with obituaries.

• Join your local genealogical society or club.

• Dig into death indexes.

• Check out the cemetery.

• Locate clues in the census.

• Visit the library

Gather what info you can from family. Birth, marriage and death dates are good to start with. Next step would be taking that info and using the internet, church records, government census records, etc. to dig deeper. There are plenty of intenet sites, most involve some form of payment, sadly.

If you are in North America, and you have access to a Mormon/Jesus Of Latter-Day Saints church, they have a family resource center that is most helpful (and free!), no matter what faith you family follows.

Happy hunting!
