A Foreman grill works wonders, but if you don't have access to one, do your best to use a deep skillet with a lid, or even a cast iron saucepan with a lid. The lid helps melt the cheese fast enough that you don't burn the bread.

I'm a fan of buttering both sides of both pieces of bread, but go easy on the inside buttering; you don't want the stickiness of the cheese voided by the slippery melted butter.

I go for cheese slices (a wire-and-roller cheese slicer is the only way to go), no more than about an eighth of an inch thick. Don't go right up to the edge of the bread, either, to avoid melting cheese spilling over onto the skillet and burning.

Keep a close eye on the sandwich, as there's nothing worse than getting a scorched cheese sandwich instead of a grilled cheese sandwich.

Cast iron skillet
Real butter
Grated cheese of choice (I like sharp cheddar)
White bread

Heat skillet to less than medium flame (or #4 on electric) and slap a pad of butter in it to melt. Toss in a piece of bread. As soon as it browns on the one side remove it. Repeat with a second piece of bread and new pad of butter. Put cheese on browned side of the bread (so the uncooked sides are facing out) and repeat the above for the uncooked sides.

Real butter on the outside of the bread and pesto on the inside (even store bought pesto from the deli counter).....a good melting cheese, I like Muenster, inside the sandwich and Parmesan sprinkled on the outside.....press it down into the butter......if it's summer time and you have good tomatoes....tomato slices inside are nice.....if it's winter....bleh, don't bother......and then make sure your non stick pan is hot before putting the sandwich on.......I love love love Grilled Cheese sandwiches......oh, make sure cheese goes all the way to the edge of the bread and let it melt out and get crusty around the edges of the sandwich....best part.

Are we just talking about quick and dirty?

Buttery cooking spray
Choice of Bread
Choice of Cheese

Coat your fry pan with the spray and drop your bread-cheese-bread sandwich on top.
Cook on med-high heat until bread is brown and crispy.
Flip bread, press down and repeat.

Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to make.

I like to use velveeta because it melts smoothly. Then, butter both sides of 2 slices of bread. Add cheese in the middle and place on a hot skillet. When one side is brown, flip and brown the other side. Enjoy!

The easiest and best way to make cheese toasties is to use the toaster bag.

You make your cheese sandwich and then pop it in then bag which then put into the pop up toaster.

Quick, clean and easy.

Well this is a personal preference but I think it is delicious...

1)Get some good sourdough bread
2)Get velveeta cheese and slice it to your desired cheese amount
3)Spread a very small amount of miracle whip(like mayo but better in my opinion)
4)Add cheese and close
5)Spread butter on outsides of sourdough bread
6)Head up frying pan
7)Throw it on there until it is golden on one side then flip.

Mmmm I'm craving one now :)

Slices white bread (Wonder style)
Cheddar Cheese
Margarine

Prepare your "chilled greasy" like so:

Warm non-stick frying pan to medium heat. An iron skillet is more traditional, but it's 2008 and so an easier, quicker, no fuss method is to use the modern no-stick pan.

Slice enough cheddar cheese to fit between your bread slices. Slices that are too think will not get melted before the bread is toasted as slices that are too thin are insufficient. Both cases will rob you of melted stringy cheese goodness.

Spread margarine on one side of each piece of bread. Butter can be used, but usually margarine spreads easier and quicker.

Assemble sandwich with an even layer of cheese between both slices of bread with the butter sides out. Ensure that no cheese is sticking outside the crusts as this will allow cheese to melt into pan causing possible sticking or burning issues.

Cooking time may vary, but typically one cooks the first side for several minutes (approx. 3 to 6) until golden brown and then flips it over to cook the other side. Take care when flipping sandwich as by then the cheese will be melty and the two pieces of bread may slide apart - once again robbing you of your cheesy goodness.

Once cooked, enjoy by themselves, or with a bowl of tomato soup.

First melt the butter and soak the bread in the butter for 1-2 minutes. Place 3 slices of american cheese with or without bacon between 2 slices of bread. Cook on a griddle on medium heat for 3 minutes on each side.

If you have a sandwich press, quesadilla maker, or any george foreman type grill, it just won't get any easier. Slap some cheese between two slices of bread, heat and your done.
Otherwise, heat a small frying pan to medium heat. Lightly butter one side of two pieces of bread. Stack bread, cheese, bread with the butter side out (not touching the cheese). Put the stack in the pan, heat one side until golden brown, then flip it to brown the other side.
Spice it up a little by adding garlic powder, onion powder, italian seasoning, and or tomato. Get creative, you can do alot with a grilled cheese. It also goes GREAT with tomato soup.

The best tip I can offer is to melt the butter, then use a small pastry brush or silicone brush to apply it to the bread before griliing.

This will give you an extremely even coating of butter and allow the butter to really get into the bread, giving you a wonderful golden brown crust when you fry it up.

No one has mentioned the technique I first saw in an ad for a non-stick pan.

1 put the non-stick pan on a medium burner.

2 grate a handful of cheese into the pan.

3 when the cheese has melted, and starts to bubble lay a slice of bread or toast into it.

4 the bread can be drawn out, while still sticky, or left in until its surface becomes crispy.

Other answerers have not stated that it is essential to lay down a generous amount of tomato ketchup on one's plate, in which to dip the sandwich
