What's the best way to keep my old cell number without paying for an additional cell phone line?

I have two cellular services. The first is our family plan with AT&T and the second is a Verizon BlackBerry service I have for work. Employer has been covering the cost of the Verizon account but will stop paying for it at the end of the month. Too many people have the BB number to just drop it. According to AT&T and can't just port the number over to their system without adding another line.
Is there a way to set the number up on a VOIP service and use call forwarding to route it to my cell phone?
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I used Broadvoice to take my number from PacificBell (or their name du jour). They have decent pricing and decent call routing. For instance, you can simultaneously ring your home (with an ATA adapter) and your cell phone. You can also set up a soft phone client on your computer like X-Lite.

Voicemail messages can be copied to you via e-mail attachment. They are also accessible via the customer web portal.

If you're very frugal (and a bit handy) you can get a $5.95 BYOD plan. Bring Your Own Device means that you are responsible for installation, configuration, etc. No tech support, and limited calls. But, definitely the cheapest way I know of to keep your phone number.

Still happy. They have quirks, like anyone else. For instance, you can have only one line per account. (Three numbers with distinctive ring, but still only one line.) Also, only one device per line.

Hm, well according to a retail sales consultant with AT&T who does ports everyday from all of the wireless carriers, you should be able to keep your number AS LONG AS AT&T ports the number BEFORE you cancel the Verizon account. If you cancel the Verizon account first, then the number will be lost forever.

Right - AT&T will transfer it as long as I add another phone to my plan. That extra line is what I'm trying to avoid.

Well, some VoIP business phone service provider can create your cellphone numbers as virtual extensions which can reroute a call from a number this extensions, virtually.

Yes there is a way to route calls from old number to your cellphone. Your number will be keep as long as you want. Try ringcentral services, they offer call forwarding and call routing from old number to your selected number. You can also set personal toll free number.
