What's the best way to get a reliable and affordable low-end MacBook?

I'm looking for an entry-level machine that I can rely on. Ebay is not very reliable (especially for notebooks). Refurbished from Apple is a good option but the selections are very limited.

The ideal answer would be an affordable low-end MacBook from a trusted source.
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Dealmac.com is a great place to look. However, it depends on when you do your search. They look for deals all over the internet, and for the most part, the sites they recommend are reliable. A lot of times links are to the refurbished Apple Store, but they keep on top of thing to get you some deal from Apple that you might not have known about otherwise.

This is an interesting site. Didn't see any real deals in what I need though. Although there is a very good deal on a MacBook Air w/the SSD. I don't want to trade *up* though! How does apple make me want to spend more money? Crazy.

Craisglist is a great option. I've purchased an iMac and my bro-in-law has purchased a black MacBook via Craigslist. Both were still inside their 1-year warranty. This means no matter what condition they come in Apple will repair it, and you can still purchase Apple Care, which I did for the iMac. I saved almost $400 of the retail price by buying a 6 month old machine.

I've always wanted to get in to craigslist. It's the fact that they make me pick an area that frustrates me. I suppose the web has spoiled me, but have to manually go through "nearby" areas and search each one is tedious to me. I've tried crazedlist.org but it's really just the same problem, only now with 1000 buttons. Good thought though.

Gazelle buys used electronics and then sells them in a store on eBay. They are reliable. Its company is called Second Rotation and here is the link you can use.

This seems like a good site that I would buy from. Nothing currently in my range though (only four models available). At this point I'm thinking of starting my own store as there *has* to be some good deals out there I'm missing!

The refurbs in the Apple store carry the full Apple warranty and are eligible for AppleCare. You also get another 5% cash back if you pay by Discover card and link to the Apple Store through Discover's site.

Educational discounts are another option if you are eligible.

Lastly. discounters like MacMall will not only discount the computer, but also add in items like Parallels, printer. etc. sometimes free after rebates.
