What's the best way to eliminate crabgrass?

After trying and trying, I finally got grass to grow in my bare sports. I guess I should be happy that I even have grass now, but the crabgrass is so ugly. I am scared in treating my lawn for crabgrass, that I will kill my other grass as well. Is there any way possible to get rid of the crabgrass without killing and/or harming the other grass I have?

Eliminating crabgrass from your lawn is an easy task if the grasses are just single clumps. You can even remove them with your hands. All you need to do is wet the grass thoroughly and pull out the grass by the root, making sure that all the roots are out and dispose of it.

But If the crabgrass has completely taking over your lawn, you would have to remove the affected area of your lawn, fertilize and also re-seed.

Start by scraping up the crab grass and any surrounding grass close to it. Make sure you take out all the root parts of the crab grass to avoid re-growth.

With a drop spreader add starter fertilizer to the area, followed by a layer of rich compost ,then spread evenly .

Next, using a drop spreader ,add the grass seed and cover it up in the soil. Finally, water the area lightly and leave to grow.

Note: Some people use pre-emergent herbicides to get rid of the crabgrass, but if not done properly, it might affect the other plants.

"Put on a pair of gloves. Grab a serrated knife or a V-shaped weeding tool. Slice into the root of the crabgrass. Pull up the weed and discard. Repeat.

No fun? But all kidding aside, sometimes that is not a bad approach. You might be surprised what you can accomplish by taking 15 or 20 minutes each evening. Start on one side and methodically work your way across the yard. You can cover a good size area each week this way.

Enlist the help of a family member and have a nice conversation outside each evening as the air cools. Kids can be surprisingly effective at this when they are helping you, and not being ordered to do it by themselves. Just think, you get less exposure to chemical or TV pollution, while you kill crabgrass for free, plus the bonding!"

There are other ways but most of which can affect the entire yard, killing everything you worked so hard for... So for safety first an hour or two with just you and the lawn should do it.
