What's the best way to catch a mouse?

Our apartment is being haunted by a mouse. I've managed to seal up all the places where it seems to be getting in with the exception of some spot behind the stove which is the only place where we're currently seeing any fresh droppings. I've tried all kinds of traps with no luck. Maybe I need to disconnect the stove and fill some spot there, but I kind of fear some great mouse endgame where our apt blows up and it wins. ;-b

I live in the Poconos and mice are a common occurrence when the weather starts getting cold. Depending on a few factors, mice problems can be dealt with.

First you need to decide how humane you want to be when ridding your home of the little vermin. Humane traps can be purchased at most natural foods/organic stores or via the internet. These traps will let you catch the mouse alive and you will have to put it outside yourself. The problem with this kind of trap is that the mice always seem to find their way back inside.

Now if you don't wish to be humane about getting rid of the mice, you can use poison. D-con pellets are poisonous pellets that a mouse is attracted too because it smells like food. These pellets get taken and stored by one mouse and often brought to the rest of the mice in its nest/den. When eaten the mouse will die and so will any other mice that eat the pellets. This is what I use and it has worked to keep the mice at bay.

Glue traps are another method that can be used. I tried spring traps but those do not work because my mice seem to be too smart and get the food without springing the trap. Glue traps are sticky and when a little mouse foot gets stuck on it, it won't go anywhere. The down side to glue traps is that it does not kill the mouse and when a mouse gets stuck it makes sounds that no one wants to hear. Plus, it up to you to dispose of the mouse while it is yelping and struggling on the glue trap.

If I was allowed pets I would have a cat. They are the very best protection against mice but only if you have a cat with a hunter personality. Some cats might not want to catch mice at all.

Good luck in your quest. I hope you can find what works for you!

I vote for the traitor mouse, if you can get one, but it does assume that you have a cat to begin with.

The best way to keep the mouse away is to have a cat at home. We live in an apartment. We got the apartment about 8 years ago. According to our neighbor who lives just right beside us, before we got there, there are lots of rats running around and sometimes, destroy some of their things. But since we have cats when we arrived, the rats disappear.

And now, 8 years later, I assure you, I haven't seen a single mouse alive running around the house or even at the garden. Sometimes, there'll be one by the door but dead. Surely the cats caught them somewhere outside and they're showing off their catch to us for extra treats at meal time. :)

lol :) There are other cat lovers here aside from me. ^^ But it's not just that I love cats, it's because they're the best thing to have to keep out those mice without you chasing them or spending too much on poison or traps which sometimes could be a lot harmful especially if you have kids at home

Take one plastic bottle with long neck. Cut leg out of women stocking. Place stocking inside plastic bottle and secure with rubber band. Push a piece of banana right to the end of the bottle. We have used this method a number of times. For some reason the mouse can get in but gets caught up in the stocking inside the bottle and cannot get out!... Take mouse to mother in laws house and....

I think the trap is of little matter. The trick is bait and position. First off traps should be against the wall. Mice travel along walls it's just a fact. Point the bait side against the wall and the body of the trap outward. Second is bait. Don't use cheese or any "hard" bait. The best thing by far is peanut butter. You don't need much simply enough to coat the trigger.

If you have a large problem I suggest

These traps are highly effective. Don't believe they are humane tho if that's your goal. They tend to catch the mice in the mech's and maim them. Some of them have attachments to add a mason jar filled with water so the mice travel up and fall in the water an drown. ;If your goal is eradication this is your best bet.

These traps you need to place with the tunnel parallel to the wall and completely against it. This way the mice think it's just a natural piece of the wall and follow along it until they find the whole and climb through.

Good Luck!

It depends whether you're willing to try a humane trap, versus a lethal trap. In my experience, lethal traps work better. Ideally though, you should try to seal up all the holes they use to get into your apartment. The best solution for most people is to use a can of aerosol spray foam like the one linked below.

For best results with the lethal traps, buy at least two of the common traps (per location) and place them where you have spotted droppings, particularly near holes. I recommend the newer traps pictured below which have a larger surface area for the mouse to step on.

Put a little peanut butter on the bait area, and place the trap so that the trigger side is against the wall - on either side of the entryway into your home, if possible. Some of these traps don't require bait, but I find it can help to place some on the trap.

If you have a porch area, or enclosed space outside of your home, consider looking there for places where mice can get in that can also be sealed, or where you can place more traps.

If you find that this doesn't help enough, consider buying poison to put out. For poison though, just be careful of children and pets in your home that they don't ingest any. You may also want to be careful with any pets in terms of regular traps as well.

Since you have the entry point figured out, it sounds to me that a glue trap would work the best, cheapest, and safest especially if you have pets or kids.

quoted:

Glue traps work by capturing a mouse after it steps onto a sticky board or tray.

Pros. Glue traps are inexpensive, as are snap traps and live traps, and usually don't require you to add bait. Children and pets can't get injured by accidentally coming in contact with glue traps, as they can with snap traps. Also, children can't get sick because these traps don't contain any pesticides or other dangerous chemicals.

Cons. Glue traps are widely criticized as inhumane because they cause a slow death to a captured mouse. Also, as mice try to become unstuck, they'll likely hurt themselves. They can also lose their potency if they get dusty. (To prevent this problem, some glue traps, such as the Victor Mouse Glue Board, can be assembled to form a protective tent.)

I found traps to be useless, mice are slick little bastards, the only effective way to caught them is using poison.

The best choice is to use a product based on Warfarin o Brodifacoum, mixed with cereals and other food. Once the mouse is poisoned, it will go to it's burrow and infect other around, they usually die in 2/3 days.

You need to be aware of two things, use a product that contains chemicals in order to dissect the mouse once is dead, otherwise, if you can't find it, the smell will find you.

AVOID any product that uses female hormones, that will get you even more mice.

Good luck.

I saw a mouse in a 'trap' at my neighbors.
Some really super strong, super sticky stuff stuff.
I paw in that goo and he will be stuck. You might need to tie a weight to the tray of sticky stuff. I'm sure it will be a nasty, horrible death for the little varmint tho. I wouldn't resort to this method unless I was really desperate.
You could just give him/her a cookie every now and then. Good luck.

Traps can leave a stinking rotting corpse that you will be subject to if you miss or forget about the trap and it gets one.

If you use a poison, only use a poison that advertises tha it will dry up the mouse if eaten as it also drives them out of the house in search of water. But do not leave the poison anywhere even remotely possible that a child or a pet might be able to get at.

A cat can do an excellent job as well, but not always. Or maybe its just our cat! We have had a mouse from time to time setup house in our house and that dang cat never caught them. I did think of maybe starving him just a little so he would be hungry and go after the mouse at least, maybe scare him to death sinc he was not a good hunter, but I couldn't bring myself to it so I used the specific rodent poison and was extra, extra, extra careful with its use and where I put it. I made sure it was placed in a couple of spots that ONLY a mouse or other rotent could get at it.

But you do ask "Catch" a mouse so I am wondering if you may want to catch it alive? If so there are some products out there that allow you to do that as well.

You do have to remember to empty these and set the mouse or mice free someplace though or they will die in them eventually and stink.

Oh yes I do recall once when at the cottage, (before I got married) a girlfriend of mine threw a boot at a mouse that startled her and she got him! So get an old boot and in a ninja crouch just wait for the bliter to show up an boom.

Good luck with that mouse.

I have found the best way to catch a mouse is to put peanut butter on a trap. It has worked for us every single time. But that does depend on if you're comfortable with killing the mouse. I would highly recommend trying it though. Best of luck!

I used this plan to make a Free live mouse trap.
http://www.instructables.com/id/Simple-_No-Kill_-Mouse-Trap/

I successfully caught 6 mice with this, 3 in one hour (had to keep resetting)

also, Peanut butter IS the best bait.

be sure to dump the mice several miles from your home or they will just come back.

(Could be easily converted to kill by putting 6" of water in the bottom of the garbage can)

It is a known fact that mice have poor eye sight so they tend to run along the side walls more often than not. they do this for sense of direction. The best place to set up traps are alongside walls. I also think that you should trick them and put boric acid in peanut butter. the overwhelmingly strong odor of the peanut butter will mask the poisonous boric acid.

People think using cheese is good on mouse traps. I had no success with that. Peanut butter is a winner for me.
Unplug the stove and move it. It seems there is a hiding spot there. So keep the trap there. Mice are very clever animals.Make sure, there are no food for them to eat in your apartment. Complaining to the super will be nice. Then they will bring some specially trained people to get rid of the mice.
Smell of cats will drive them away. If you don't have cat, borrow some cat items from a friend who has cats, like the used cat litter or cats bed(used by the cat, to have the smell)
