Whats the best value on a video camera to record and stream live content i.e. musical performances under $1,000. Must be live.

What specs should I look for? How do you know if a camera can relay to a laptop or other recording device vs recording to a memory card of some sort?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I've answered a similar question here before.

Let's start with the obvious: You need a camera. You need to be able to record it. Without knowing if you are going to record to the camera as well as live stream, I can only give you a general direction to go.

Let's assume you want to stream to the internet and record. You have several options: miniDV, DVD, or hard drive / memory card based cameras. I'd look for either a USB or FireWire connection as a "must have" feature. The most obvious thing to look for is "Works with Windows XP / Vista / Mac OS X" on the box or in the product descriptions.

Second, I HATE SHAKYCAM! I'd recommend a tripod. "Image stabilization" in camera is only so good, but it can also look "jerky" when you WANT to do a pan / zoom / dolly move.

Third, how are you going to broadcast? UStream? YouTube? Download via iTunes? You'll need to do your research and find out how they can accept your output and rebroadcast it.

Fourth, you'll need to determine PC or Mac. There are recording / editing platforms at the consumer level that will work, but it depends greatly on the host hardware that you're wanting to record on and the camera you buy.

Best Buy has a decent selection of consumer and prosumer cameras that may suit your needs. A word of caution: Canon has great optics, but lousy customer support. I've had nothing but sucess with Sony in both the consumer and broadcast divisions, and Panasonic is always a decent choice for the "budget minded".

I'm not going to get into the "how you're planning to feed it audio" here. That's a whole other topic.
