When I was a little girl my father took me to a neighborhood yard sale. A large pitcher decorated with colorful giraffes caught my attention. It looked so pretty and I was so sure my Mother would love it! The problem: it was clearly tagged $5 and I only had $1! As I carefully held it to admire its beauty, the kind lady in charge of the yard sale asked if I wanted to buy it. My reply: "Yes, but I only have a dollar". Her reply: "Sold". Those were the sweetest word spoken to me on that day.

I'll always remember my Mother's radiant smile when I returned home with my "bargain of the day". The giraffe pitcher became my Mother's favorite gift. It was proudly used to serve milk at many breakfasts we shared over the years. My father loved to share the story of what a bargain hunter I had become.

After spending a fortune on cat toys for my princess, I have found that her favorite toy is really just a box.

I figure the cost of most of these boxes falls into the dollar or less range.
This gives her hours of enjoyment and plenty of memories for me.

Here's my favorite cat box video. See for yourself.

I bought a picture of a wandering man with a guitar over his shoulder for $1 at an auction once, 30 years ago. I had it for years and years, and finally lost track of it. I used to look at it and wonder what it would be like to be a traveling man with an instrument and a song, just walking about the countryside. Funny thing, a year or two ago, my son says "hey dad, look at this picture I bought at a garage sale, isn't this the same guy you had all those year?" Well it was a copy of the same picture. Turns out my son also was intrigued by the wandering gypsy lifestyle of the man in the painting. Neither of us is likely to ever become a wandering minstrel, we are much too responsible for that. but sitting there imagining what it might be like is a great stress reliever, and I wouldn't be surprised if one day my grandson has one of these wandering guitar player pictures on his wall, and him sitting back with his fingers locked behind his head, eyes closed, imagining what it would be like to wander around making music.

Paperback books only cost $ .75 new when I was 10. I got $5 per week allowance because my mom was at work when we got home from school, so I made dinner and had a lot of responsibility. I bought myself a whole library of books that I loved, though, 6 or 7 every week.

I picked up a used book for less than $1 called "The Platypus of Doom and other nihilists". I bought the book just because the title intrigued me, and it turned out to be a really interesting, if different, kind of read.

The best thing I ever bought with only $1 was a book on children’s dream analysis that I actually found at a local Dollar Tree store. At the time, my little one was having nightmares and was scared to sleep alone in his bedroom because he kept having a recurring dream of a snake chasing him. A few weeks later, I made a spontaneous trip to Dollar Tree to purchase a few educational workbooks for my preschooler, which could be found there at a reduced price (well exactly a dollar, instead of the usual $3-$5 for one book) and happened to find a number of great books on a nearby shelf. After thumbing my way through the various titles, I encountered the interesting book on interpreting your child’s dreams. I invested in it, read the various chapters outlining different dream scenarios and what they might mean, and actually found that some of the information held true and applied to my child in some way. After applying some of the tips of the book, like talking about the dreams with your child and letting him draw about it (and other activities that may bring forth some of the true reasons behind the dreams) I found my son become more confident of going to bed at night and even though some of the nightmares returned on occasion, he was able to get through them by himself and understood that they were simply dreams and not reality.

I'm actually having more trouble coming up with a really great answer than I thought. I'm trying to think only of items I've purchased at a dollar store, as there are probably few other times in life I've ever purchased something for less than $1. I'm going to have to cave and say chocolate just like someone else here. Reese's Peanut Butter cups, for what it's worth.

i got this neat glass pyramid paperweight from a yard sale long ago. I put it on my dresser as a kid, now as an adult it sits on my desk. It's a prism and shows many colors in it when the sun hits it just right.

I found a JCPenny Anniversary blow out 1 hour sale and everything was marked down to less than $1.00 I walked out with a new wardrobe for both me and my husband for less than $50.00. It really paid to be going to walk the mall at 7 am on a Sunday morning and luck up on that sale .
