What's the best temperature for storing red wines?

How warm/cold should I keep bottles of red wine when I'm waiting to serve them? Do I need to keep different reds at different temperatures - like Merlot vs Pinor Noir?

The storing temperature of your wine is very important. Many fantastic wine collections have been ruined because the temperature and moisture was unstable. High temperatures (above 65 degrees F) will cause a wine to age before it's time and therefore its flavor and balance will be lost. When a wine is chilled too cold, the wine can also lose its aromas and flavor.

When you store wine, always keep the wine bottles away from exposure to heat and away from sunlight. That is why it's a good idea to store the wine in a wine fridge, wine cellar or other room that can be temperature controlled. Large fluctuations in temperature will harm the cork and the wine. The perfect temperature to store red wine is 50-55ºF or 10-16ºC. White wines can be stored at 45ºF.

Snooth is one of the best, most well-respected websites out there for wine. They just published a story today stating that storing at 52 degrees is best for really long-aging wines, 55 degrees for long aging wines and 65 degrees for wine that you're going to drink so they can come to fruition earlier.

There have been many discussion about what temperature is optimal for storing red wine. As it turns out, most people store and serve their red wines too warm. Red wines should be stored around 55 degrees in an insulated basement or wine fridge. Before serving your wine, you'll want to set the bottle out an hour or two at room temperature. If the wine is warmer than room temperature the smell of the wine will be more alcohol than the flavor of the wine. If it's served too much colder than room temprature, the wine will lose its distinctive flavor and appear dull.

Certain red wines will require different storage temperatures. For Chianti, Beaujolais and other light red wines, 60 to 65 degrees is optimal temperature. For heavier red wines, 63 to 68 degrees is optimal. What determines the optimal temperature for the red wines is the amount of alcohol, fruit and tannin it contains.

The experts say to keep wine at peak taste when it is being stored keep it between 50 and 59 degrees. Storing the wine where it is above those 59 degrees makes it spoil or overcook, which fouls the taste and composition of it. Storing the wine at cooler then average temperatures will cause it to freeze which will also alter the taste.

I would assume its better to keep them chilled as I see so many wine cellars in the movies on television. However, those adults around here who drink wine on a regular basis simply store it in wine racks in their kitchen or dining room. Of course, most people also buy wine, which will also, consumed rather quickly so they do not need to worry about storage.
