-Smith and Wollensky is an older steak house in the city. Classic, delicious steaks. You can never go wrong
-Angelo & Maxie's is a trendy, popular house that never disappoints
-Keen's may have the best family style garlic mashed potatoes go along side a mouth watering filet mignon
-Morton's is unique in that they bring a table over showing raw steaks and lobsters and let you pick your cut, after a brief explanation of the differences. They also ask you if you'll be having dessert at the time you order your food. You may think you can't answer that question, but trust me, you can. Get their homemade chocolate cake. They ask you this so early because the caked is freshly baked while you are dining. it's a small cake that resembles a molten lava but the 2 key differences are 1) it's baked while you eat and 2) it has godiva chocolate inside. Besides, seeing your part of the cow before you eat it is just cool. Takes the guesswork out of ordering
Now, this last one is not truly in NYC but it's just over the Williamsburg Bridge in Brooklyn and has to qualify. It's in the top 10 in Zagats constantly and opened sometime like 1924 (i'm not sure on the date).
It's Peter Luger's and the best steakhouse ever. Don't get a menu, you don't need it and bring a large group of people. Start with the baby lambchops that melt in your mouth with a side order of bacon for the table. Dieters, stay home. The bacon isn't on the menu, but it's available. Then order for a group. They'll bring you a giant cutting board with all cuts of meat for everyone to pick their style. The floor is covered in sawdust, the waiters are surly, they don't take credit cards but this place is an old world steakhouse plopped down in brooklyn. Their signature Peter Luger's sauce is so good that it's sold in stores and the waiters at any of the above restaurants get really offended if you ask for it there. I think it was at Smith and Wollensky when I jokingly asked and the waiter actually walked off.
If you're in the city and want a steak, make the trip over the bridge to Luger's

M$"Strip House combines a very sexy atmosphere, not to mention a 5 star scene, with incredible steaks!! I couldn't think of a hotter place in the city for steaks. The cream spinach is soo addictive and you can't go wrong with any of the steaks.. Yes, I've tried them all!"
