What's the best spyware removal tool to recommend to a relative who isn't particularly computer savvy?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Not computer savvy: I recommend using spybot search and destroy, with all those extra components that come with it like "Tea Timer". If you can do this for them, schedule a weekly scan and fix. It should keep their computer pretty clean and safe. These two programs currently have a narly virus that came to life on my laptop yesterday completely at bay when my virus scanner couldn't find it.

I also recommend having them own ad-aware. It's really self-explanatory, and if they run it every once in a while it can really help as well.

I'd recommend trying out AdAware from LavaSoft (http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php).

They have a free product and it has always worked for me in the past.

Its very easy to use and there is a free version (as well as ore functional paid for versions) so you can easily try it out and see if it suits your needs.

My relatives have often asked this. The thing about freeware is that, usually (in my experience) it takes MANUAL intervention to get it to work its best. For instance, with AdAware, you have to start it up now and then to update the definitions, and start it up now and then to run a scan.

I'm not saying AdAware isn't good: in my opinion, it's VERY good. It's just that, the free version must be handled manually. Not so good for a not-so-savvy relative. Maybe the paid-for version doesn't require this: I haven't paid for it and tried it.

What you might prefer for a not-so-savvy person is a package, ANY package, that runs pretty much on its own, without the need for manual intervention! For that, in my experience, you pay. Maybe not a lot, but some. For example, we have AVG. It's pretty good, and I'm NOT saying it's the best, I'm just saying it takes no manual intervention. It just sits there, running, and downloads its updates when needed, and you can schedule scans on a regular basis. It costs a small amount. So all I'm saying is, pay for something that runs on its own, with no need for intervention, to relieve your relative of some grief.

For PC, I'd recommend Spybot - Search and Destroy. I use it.

Malwarebytes is pretty good, you install it and then click a tab and a Start button to begin the scan. Updating is also mostly automatic.

Use Mozilla firefox as the browser, instead of Microsoft internet explorer.

This doesn't really answer my question. Further, its a specious arguement to say firefox is safer. It has smaller market share so it's natural to expect a smaller number of known vulnerabilities.
