What's the best speaker system for an iPod touch in the $100 to $250 range?

Would like to have one with a rechargeable battery if that exists (i.e. so you can take it outside and not plug it in).

Good for a small party (i.e. a dinner party for six on the deck, not a dance party for 60!).
Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I had this same question.. spent lots of time listening to the different units on the market and have a few years of studio record production experience in my ears

The clear winner to my ears and wallet was the Altec Lansing inMotion iM600

HOWEVER!!!!

If you use an iPhone you'll have to put it in airplane mode or you'll hear crazy sounds from time to time.

It works fine with my 1st gen iPhone and charges the phone as well, it will work with a 3G iPhone as well, but won't recharge the battery.

Altec has apparently solved these problems with the newer.. Altec Lansing T612 which is only $50 more and better on many fronts.. http://astore.amazon.com/apple-ipod-touch-20/detail/B0014XKQY2

Well, Altec Lansing has been making iPod speakers longer than anyone else, so it goes without saying that they will make a better speaker. (1)

That said, you have several choices: CNET lists these three as the best:

1. Altec Lansing inMotion iM600 $105.00 - $139.00
- Also listed as the best on this site: http://www.ipodspeakerreviews.com/altec-lansing/altec-lansing-im600-ipod-speakers-with-fm-radio.html

2. Altec Lansing iMT702 inMotion Max $168.00 - $199.99

3. Altec Lansing InMotion Moondance Glow iM402 $143.90 - $179.95

The Griffin "Evolve" speaker system.
http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/evolve

Wireless, rechargeable speakers, great sound, easy to add more speakers to the system for a party. A great value at only $299. Pick one up used or just spend the extra few bucks...you won't regret it!

I faced this question just a couple of weeks ago and decided on a Boston Acoustics Horizon iDS2.

I have owned a Boston Acoustics Receptor Radio for several years now and have loved the sound of it, this was mostly in part to its 3.5" full range driver. The iDS2 has two of those drivers in it with an iPod dock on top of the unit. It's an all-in-one unit so there are no extra wires hanging around and its easy to move room to room. The design is dead simple, a power button and two volume buttons, everything you need, nothing you don't. It has a composite video output, USB port (for syncing an iPod), Aux input (to connect it to a PC, TV, DVD, etc...) and power outlet (for the removable cable).

It has a nice frequency range and pack a surprising amount of bass for such a small unit, yet retains full mids and clean treble, easily sounds better than the usual Bose, Altec Lansing, JBL suspects. Besides the great sound, my second favorite aspect of this unit is its simple design, I don't care about radios, clocks, alarms and the dozens of buttons and lights that go with them in other units. I just want something that sounds good, is simple to use and has a nice clean look to it (like the iPod itself). Both the Bose SoundDock and the iDS2 have that, but I found the iDS2 sounds quite a bit better and costs quite a bit less than the Bose. It retails for $180 but I found mine for $150 on Amazon.com.

I've been a big fan of the Logitech sets for a long time. I use them in teaching situations in rooms supporting 10-40 attendees and the sound fills the room. Great on the back porch for atmosphere and in the kitchen for podcasts over busy cooks: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/ipod_mp3_speakers/&cl=us,en

I got my sister the Altec Lansing iPod Speakers (M602) for Christmas. I was told these were really good. They have no crazy wires, produces great sound, and it's very compact. It accomodates all iPods except for the iPod shuffle. It doesn't take disposable batteries but it's definitely rechargeable with a reliable adapter. I LOVE IT!

The Gear4 HouseParty III is a good stereo speaker system for your iPod as well but it's around $250. It's good for parties obviously, especially since you can access your playlist with a remote. AND it's an alarm

However, I still like the Altec speakers better though! I've included an informative link in the source box. Hope this helps!

I have heard good things about the Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere Portable speakers and they can easily be found at multiple shops for about $120. There is one which offers a rechargeable battery, Logitech mm50 Portable Rechargeable Speaker and it is $150.

And then if you would like to go all out you can head over to New Egg and get the Cyber Acoustics White 3 Piece Subwoofer & Satellite Speaker System Model A-210 for $190.

Of course, this all depends on the type of music you'll be listening to, but for me, the Kicker ik500 rocks. I recently purchased this because of the Kicker name and the legendary bass their drivers put out (coming from my days of making subwoofers). It's right at your $250 limit, but this thing will sound great both indoors and out. One drawback is it's AC only (no batteries) but if I do need to play music away from power, I have a portable 12V battery (for jumping car batteries) and a simple AC/DC converter which will run this thing for hours. Many of these portable speakers might sound good on your desk, but by the pool? Forget it. Not this thing - it will play LOUD and clear. Here's a link to Crutchfield (which also has some very nice, high res pics.

The best are offered exclusively by Hammacher Schlemmer.
The Rechargeable Indoor/Outdoor Wireless Speakers. They are wireless, and they are also compact, yet work well for a small dinner party. I like the handle on top because they are easy to carry around. For $199.95, these speakers are just what you are looking for!
