Whats the best software to sync two folders on a network?

Tip for best answer: M$3.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

If Mac or *Nix, try psync or rsync. Fast, free and very powerful.

Yeah, there are simply too many variables in this question for a complete and accurate answer.

What operating system are you running?

What type of files do you need to sync? How big are they?

How often do you require them to be sync'ed?

What type of network do you have? Is it a fast gig or a slower 10 meg?

Questions valued over M$1 are usually interesting and I would love to give this one a complete and accurate answer.

There are many apps for this, however, I use SugarSync.com for all my inter-computer syncing tasks.

It's really a great service. You set it up X number of computers, choose which folders you want synched, and where, and voila - you're set.

Your files are also instantly available On-Line as well - so if you want to access them via Web, or via iPhone app, it's easy.

Today they launched version 1.5 which allows you to even share any folders you want with friends and family. When you update it on your computer, it gets updated on the web - and everyone always gets the new files.

Additionally - shared folders are version controlled, so all changes are saved as well :)

Sincerely, I've been using it since the day one. While it's not free, it's definitely inexpensive!

ChronoSync is the complete data management utility that allows you to efficiently synchronize or backup files and folders from one disk location to another. There are hundreds of settings available within each Synchronizer document to customize your synchronizations. You can synchronize or backup files to almost any device. ChronoSync will even automatically mount other computers. Create as many documents as you need to handle all the synchronization and backup scenarios you have.

For Windows based computers, which is what I have, I use syncback from 2brightsparks. They have a free version as well as several other purchase programs, which all have trial versions. I like this program because it works and works well. I have a home network and syncback allows me to keep everything synced over all of my drives with the free version.  One great feature of this software is before you do any back ups or syncs you can run a simulated run which allows you to see what will happen with a actual run without disturbing anything.  You can then run or make changes, you can also schedule the program to run at specific times.  You can also set several profiles, this allows you to create a profile for complete drives, profiles for specific folders, profiles to do different type of back ups and syncs for different folders on one drive or over two drives.  Basically you have a tremendous amout of flexibility to do excatly what you need to do.  And like I said,, this all with the free version!!

Total Commander comes with a powerful synchronization tool that allows you to compare and synchronize two directories. Because Total Commander handles zip files transparently, it allows to synchronize between a zip and a directory or between two zip files. (Total Commander has network support).
