what's the best open source solution for rolling your own social network?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Check out:

Elgg
http://elgg.org
Elgg wins best open source social networking platform 2008.

The source has about 10 others.

Also, Liferay seems interesting.

Ning definitely seems interesting, but I don't *love* not having full control of a social network built upon them and the monthly prices for the pro features seem a little nickle and dime, when i'd prefer to have a once stop price point PRO version.

Elegg.org has a Facebook-esque interface/received InfoWorld's 2008 Best Open Source award, though that isn't a very official award. My second source lists 39 other programs of interest.
