I would concur with "paulatl's" answer that December seems to be an underrated time of year to visit the Hawaiian islands. The Hawaiians celebrate Christmas not only with the traditional holiday icons, but also with fireworks, which can be a treat for the younger ones. The weather is dryer during that time of year, so if you are wanting to view the many natural waterfalls along the famous road to Hana, you may be disappointed. The week between Christmas and New Year is one of our favorite times to visit, though accommodations might be a little more expensive due to that particular time window.

Spring, mid-April to mid-June, and fall, September to mid-December, are the best times to visit Maui. In terms of reliably great weather, these are the best times to visit the island. During these times the best rates are available and the island is less crowded.

It's ALWAYS a good month to visit Maui! But my favorite time of year is winter, for two reasons. (1) You can escape from the cold and snow back home. (2) The whales are only in Maui in the winter, and you can see them every day from the shore or from a whale-watching boat. I visited Maui in December one year, and I loved it! Weather was warm but not oppressive, and the whales were migrating by--you could see them from Lahaina harbor. January/February should be good too.
