What's the best Mexican or Tex-Mex restaurant to take out-of-town guests to when they are visiting Houston?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It really depends on the area of town that you want to stay at but for Mexican I reccomend Dona Tere which is at 9908 Beechnut while for Tex-Mex there is Ninfa's on Kirby, or Doneraki or there is even a small but quaint restaurant between Sheppard and Montrose called El Pueblito...there are many choices!

You should also consider Pappasitos. The Pappa's are Houston residents that have built their franchise from the ground up, and they're great people that turn out great eats. The best meal I've ever had is from Pappadeux (their seafood restaurant franchise).

Also, for super-cheap, you-just-gotta-try-it fare, hit up Taco Cabana (tons of locations). It's a quintessential Houston experience - and you simply have to get tortillas (made fresh on site) and queso. Very simple, but crazy good. They also serve beer and margaritas, which makes the experience that much better :-). Also, get their burracho beans, not the refried (this is important to note) It's ridiculously cheap and an order-at-the-counter kind of place, but it's just something most people have to do while in Houston. I have literally spent thousands of dollars at Taco C in my lifetime! (and, when visiting the family in Houston this Thanksgiving, it was also the first place I went - before I even went to the house on the way home from the airport!)

This was a fun and helpful answer, too. (SO hard to choose "best" but I think the other answer recommended more of those "places to take guests" that I was looking for.) I had to smile at yours - TC is a pleasant surprise, isn't it? Especially their homemade tortillas. You don't expect that from something that looks like a fast food chain. They have extremely cheap, tasty, filling breakfasts, too! Thanks!
