what's the best kind of dog for a small Manhattan apartment that doesn't shed too much, or yelp too loudly?

M$You might check with your local breed rescue organizations. (How to Adopt a Dog can help you find one). Your best bet is to adopt an older dog. Housebreaking a puppy is very difficult unless you are home all the time. It is also a good way to ensure the dogs behavior.

M$After 3 days we had it trained to sit and it knows where its food is stored.
They're also small, playful and when they get to about a year old they can go for a run around the park.
Pictures at 8 months old.
I'm an owner of a Labradoodle

M$Shedding is something that can be discussed objectively. Bichon Frise are "hypoallergenic" and shed very, very little. They are generally even tempered and low maintenance but active and affectionate.

M$I was just about to say the same thing. Bichon Frises are good when it comes to not shedding.
Small dogs "yelp" or bark often because they are allowed to dominate the house hold. Behaviors that show dominance such as sitting on the human's lap are more acceptable in small dogs. So, these dogs think they are "the boss" and bark more often to show their control.

M$Oh man! Beagles are not quiet dogs!

I have a beagle and (although she doesn't bark) she does require a lot of stimulus for her over active mind. She is my first beagle, but many other beagle owners have told me this is typical of the breed.

M$I'd have to agree with barkiness being a behavioral issue. Don't carry them around everywhere (like Paris' chihuahua) and socialize them when they're young around people and other pets. They'll be less likely to be barky. Also, they all have individual personalities so this may or may not apply to all dogs ;)

M$If you're fixated on a dog, try a beagle mix. They're incredibly loyal, easy to train, and they have very sweet personalities. They don't shed at all, and they only yelp if you step on 'em!
My beagle mix that I'm looking at right now.

M$Most of the dogs you listed are not small dogs, not would they be suitable for an apartment as they are bred to be hunting dogs and need lots of activity.
I refute your refutation!
:)
My answer has been edited. The dogs are small, they are low activity, they are quiet, and they don't shed much.
