What's the best FREE software solution for editing audio files (MP3s, etc.) on a Windows based PC?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

this version of audacity will run from a usb drive (on a windows machine) - no install required. great if you move a lot between windows machines.

keep both our mp3 files and the editing software together on a portable drive.

After trying every other free solution available, I would have to say Audacity is the best for Windows users. It has many of the same features of commercial audio software and supports VST and LADSPA plug-ins. The latest release adds support for importing and exporting more formats.

It depends on your definition of "editing". If you're looking to actually cut them up and splice them back together, add effects or manipulate volume, I think you're looking for Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net)

If you're trying to manage the ID3 tags (so the metadata, not the music itself) I suggest using whatever software came with your mp3 player, or Windows Media Player. I've tried "free" ID3 editors and haven't been impressed. Personally, I use iTunes because I have an iPod.

I've been searching for a good free audio editor. I usually use Audacity, but it can be quite complicated to use sometimes. The "GoldWave" product that was mentioned in another answer actually is software that you'd have to pay for. To be honest, Audacity is probably one of the better known audio editors even if it can complicated to use.

Unfortunately it is the only audio editor that I've actually had any success with, despite its sometimes frustrating user interface. So I'd recommend (a little reluctantly) Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/) On the plus side, they have Mac, Windows and Linux versions so once you've learned how to use it, you can use it pretty much anywhere.

Audacity, an excellent free tool. If your looking for something less complex, Windows Movie Maker does an excellent job for short simple editing.
