They provide lots of leverage for stuck corks. It's easy to stick one in your pocket if you're going some place with wine, you can open it even if they've lost theirs. (Corkscrews are easily lost, perhaps because consuming the contents of the bottle makes you forget to return the corkscrew to its home.)
They're easy to use and don't have much in the way of moving parts to break. If they do break or get lost, they're cheap to replace.
The rabbit corkscrews are easier to use and are definitely a nice thing to have if you drink a lot of wine, and it's great that they've come down into the $50 range. (They used to cost hundreds). But for my money, the waiter's corkscrew is only a bit harder to use, and a lot cheaper.

M$You position the thing on top of the bottle, easily and smoothly pull the lever down, pull it up just as effortlessly, and the cork is out. You pull down one more time and it pops the cork off the screw. And before taking the cork out you can use the little foil slicer thingie to cut off the foil.
Highly highly recommended -- even for occasional wine drinkers. Great gift, too...

This one from Amazon.com looks like a good one and has some great reviews. One review said "Somehow the pressure applied by this corkscrew will allow the most feeble cork to turn and lift."
