You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think it depends if you are committed to certain type of phone or services. For example, figure out if you want, or will want in near future, an iPhone, Nokia E71, etc. iPhone is only available from AT&T;, and smart phones like E71 or Blackberry are best suited for companies with 3G or comparable coverage. As far as being "cutting ege" goes, AT&T;, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint are your best options. (Of course, this "cutting edge" is nothing compared to European and South Asian countries.)
Here are a few things I'd suggest you keep in mind:
- AT&T; and T-Mobile have the best phone selections.
- I have AT&T;, but in my experience T-Mobile has much better customer service.
- One of THE MOST important factor is to figure out coverage area. Which services work best where you live? My buddy lives and works in area where Sprint is the best bet. Their coverage is fantastic for him.
- If you don't travel abroad (or need to use your phone outside US), you may be well suited for Verizon or Sprint. Not that they don't offer phones that work overseas, but unlocked quadband GSM phones work overseas by default and nothing special is needed. On domestic soil, you'll get great coverage from Verizon. Verizon does have an impressive coverage area. This comes especially handy when traveling, and trying to surf the internet in rural areas.

So basically; figure out your phone preferences, and figure out which service has the best coverage where you spend the most time. Go from there.

Hope this helped.

I think coverage is the most important issue.

To find out about that, you need to ask people in your city.
I have used AT&T;, Verizon, and Sprint. I am a devoted Sprint convert.

Most of my friends use AT&T; or Verizon. They drop calls constantly. I do not even remember the last time I dropped a call call with Sprint. It has been years.

I live in Dallas. The results may be completely different in your area.

PS, They all have terrible customer service.

Personal experience.

My own personal experience was with Verizon for many many years (until recently when I wanted an iPhone). I would recommend Verizon for one reason: customer service.

In my nearly ten years with them I NEVER had a single problem that customer service could not solve over the phone, with the first person, not a supervisor, and not from a tech support line in a foreign country. In talking to a customer service rep one day I discovered why: the first person you talk to on the phone is capable of making every decision or change that a supervisor can, and they are encouraged to solve your problem the first time without having to transfer you.

In the months leading up to me leaving Verizon they would actually give me a call PERSONALLY to let me know if I was getting close to my text or minute limits. I loved that. You are also able to change your rate plan on the fly to suit your monthly minute needs.

But that being said, shop around!
