M$For what you're looking for, many people recommend stunt cars. They have better performance, allowing for tricks, at a sacrifice of speed. The "Gamestop" car has a popular following and is a good mix of speed and handling.

I would say that the PCPD Special is by far the fastest in the game. As with regards to versatility and great handling, I'd go with a stunt car as well. The Montgomery Hawker Solo is great, but you get it very late in the game. Early on, the Carbon X12 is probably the best. But it depends on your driving style, I'd say...
Hmm -- too heavy for my taste. If so, I'd go with the Spur, since it has great drifting (probably one of the best drifters in the game) But I prefer stunt cars over everything else. Typically nimble, versatile, controllable. Actually, the Hunter Calavry (the first car) is a very good car, IMHO... I used it to get all the super jumps and all the billboards...
You're right on the DeLorean -- I think there are a number of great things coming from them in 2009...
